Sugar Swirl splashes home in First Lady Stronach Stables' homebred SUGAR SWIRL (Touch Gold) confronted pacesetter Rgirldoesn'tbluff (Pine Bluff) in early stretch and inched away to a 2 1/2-length tally in the $100,000 First Lady H. (G3) over the sloppy, sealed main surface at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. Making her first start for trainer Brian Lynch, Sugar Swirl was content to sit well off the swift tempo for the opening quarter-mile, commenced her run while four wide approaching the final turn, and slowly took over under Javier Castellano. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:10, and the even-money favorite gave back $4.20, $2.80 and $2.10. Rgirldoesn'tbluff established hearty splits of :21 3/5 and :44 2/5 for the opening half-mile and did well to hold the place, eight lengths clear of her nearest foe. The nearly 4-1 third choice paid $3.80 and $3.20 while completing the $8.80 exacta ($1). Bereba (Exchange Rate) kept on along the inside to finish a clear third, ending the $63.60 trifecta ($1) at 25-1. Show paid $4.80. Quality Affair (Elusive Quality) finished fourth at 9-1, resulting in a $314.60 superfecta ($1) (6-1-2-8). Marina Ballerina (Outflanker) was next and trailed by Running Lass (Running Stag) and Princess Janie (Elusive Quality). Miss Tizzy (Cee's Tizzy) was withdrawn. Sugar Swirl captured her fourth career stakes event, but her first at the graded level, in upping her lifetime mark to 17-7-3-4, $531,124. Previously trained by Bobby Frankel, the five-year-old mare owns triumphs in the Princess Elizabeth S., Very Subtle S. and Alyssum S., to go along with a pair of graded placings. The winner was bred in Ontario, Canada, and was the first foal produced from the multiple-stakes winning Astrapi (Distinctive Pro). Her four-year-old half-sister, Silk Candy (Langfuhr), has captured back-to-back allowance/optional claiming races for Lynch.
