In Summation gets the last word in Palos Verdes Waterford Stable's IN SUMMATION (Put It Back) just subdued the pacesetting Barbecue Eddie (Stormy Atlantic) by a neck in the final strides of Monday's $150,000 Palos Verdes H. (G2) at Santa Anita, blazing six furlongs in a Cushion Track record of 1:06 3/5. The top two were reprising their roles from the El Conejo H. (G3) on New Year's Day, where In Summation had likewise collared Barbecue Eddie to establish a new track mark for 5 1/2 furlongs. Dispatched as the 9-5 favorite in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day feature, the Palos Verdes hero gave back $5.60, $3 and $2.20 while keying $1 exotics worth $8.20 (exacta) and $17 (1-3-2 trifecta). With Rafael Bejarano subbing for regular rider Corey Nakatani, who broke his collarbone on Saturday, In Summation tracked in second through splits of :21 1/5, :43 and :54 2/5. In deep stretch, Barbecue Eddie tried to hold on, but In Summation kept coming relentlessly and managed to get his neck in front. The valiant runner-up returned $3 and $2.40 as the 2-1 second choice. It was another 3 3/4 lengths back to Surf Cat (Sir Cat), who yielded $2.60 to show as the 7-2 third choice. Soul City Slew (Slew City Slew) checked in fourth, followed by Ididn'tdoanything (Trippi), Copa de Plata (Pioneering) and Fly Dorcego (Brz) (Choctaw Ridge). The Christophe Clement-trained In Summation improved his lifetime mark to 21-10-5-0, $905,166. The five-year-old captured the 2007 Bing Crosby H. (G1) in his synthetic debut and has since posted a dead-heat win in the Arlington Sprint H. and a runner-up showing in the Vernon O. Underwood S. (G3) prior to his El Conejo score. The nine-time stakes star has also placed in three graded stakes. The winner was bred in the Sunshine State by Arthur I. Appleton and produced from the winning Fiesta Baby (Dayjur), who is out of 1987 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and Mother Goose S. (G1) heroine Fiesta Gal (Alleged). In Summation sold for $80,000 at the 2004 OBS August yearling sale and brought $130,000 at the 2005 OBS March two-year-old sale. He counts Canadian stakes winner Dakota Duke (Stormy Atlantic) as a half-brother. Assistant trainer Nicholas Bachalard said that In Summation "would go home (to Florida), get a break and hopefully come back for the Breeders' Cup (Sprint [G1]) here in October."
