Dreaming of Anna just holds on in Endeavour Frank C. Calabrese's homebred champion DREAMING OF ANNA (Rahy) led every step of the way in Saturday's $147,500 Endeavour S. (G3) and just held on by a desperate nose from a rallying Lear's Princess (Lear Fan). Ridden for the first time by Cornelio Velasquez, the four-year-old chestnut carved out splits of :24 1/5, :48 4/5, 1:13 and 1:36 1/5 in her 2008 debut. Dreaming of Anna drew 1 1/2 lengths clear in midstretch and appeared to be home free, but 6-5 favorite Lear's Princess suddenly kicked into another gear after angling to the outside. Approaching the wire, Lear's Princess was rapidly gaining on the longtime leader, and the two finished as a team. The camera gave the verdict to Dreaming of Anna, who stopped the teletimer in 1:42 1/5 for 1 1/16 miles on Tampa Bay Downs' firm turf. The Wayne Catalano-trained winner gave back $5.60, $3.20 and $2.40 as the 9-5 second choice. Lear's Princess furnished mutuels of $2.80 and $2.20 and completed the chalky $12 exacta. Meribel (Peaks and Valleys) finished well on the inside to grab third, just three-quarters of a length adrift of Lear's Princess, and paid $2.20 as the 5-2 third choice. The trifecta totaled $25.60, and with the nearly 20-1 Pretoria Light (Colony Light) another 2 3/4 lengths back in fourth, the 6-8-11-10 superfecta was worth $112.80. Next came Beautiful Venue (Came Home), Jaunty Gale (Tiger Ridge), Patricia (Arg) (Mont Laurier), The Real Future (Real Quiet) and Tiger Belle (Tiger Ridge). Take the Ribbon (Chester House) and Lil's Lassie (Lil's Lad) were withdrawn. Dreaming of Anna has now amassed $1,748,172 from her 12-8-2-1 line. Unbeaten from four starts at two in 2006, the chestnut garnered the Eclipse Award in near unanimous fashion. After scorching 5 1/2 grassy furlongs in 1:01 3/5 in the Tippett S., she thrashed males in the Summer S. (Can-G3) at Woodbine and wired the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) by 1 1/2 lengths. Her sophomore campaign in 2007 got off to a less than stellar start. She finished a distant third in the Old Hat S. (G3), second in the Gaily Gaily S. and sixth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). Dreaming of Anna turned things around with a clear score in the Double Delta S. on the turf at Arlington Park, then added the Virginia Oaks and Pucker Up S. (G3) to her resume. She wrapped up her season with a game runner-up effort in the Queen Elizabeth II Invitational Challenge Cup S. (G1). Out of the multiple stakes-winning Broad Brush mare Justenuffheart, the Kentucky-bred is a full sister to Lewis Michael, who captured the Washington Park H. (G2) last summer. She has a trio of younger half-siblings, an unraced three-year-old colt named Justenuffhumor (Distorted Humor), an unnamed juvenile filly by Unbridled's Song, and an unnamed yearling filly by Giant's Causeway. Justenuffheart is herself a half-sister to 2004 champion turf horse Kitten's Joy (El Prado [Ire]) and multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Precious Kitten (Catienus).
