Costume finally wears the crown in Buena Vista Juddmonte Farms' homebred COSTUME (GB) (Danehill) spurted to a clear lead in early stretch and held all challengers in posting a measured neck win in the $150,000 Buena Vista H. (G2) over the Santa Anita lawn on Monday. Breaking alertly under Garrett Gomez, the Bobby Frankel charge tracked in second as Alexandra Rose (SAf) (Caesour) led through splits of :46 3/5 and 1:10 1/5 to the head of the stretch. Leaving the final turn, the pacesetter bore out badly and opened up a huge avenue for Costume, and the four-year-old took full advantage. The final time for the one-mile test on the firm turf was 1:34 2/5, and the 9-2 fourth choice paid $11.60, $5.20 and $3.40. Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe), the 8-5 choice, was in midpack entering the stretch and closed well enough to garner place honors. The runner-up gave back $3 and $2.40 and completed the $15.80 exacta ($1). Kris' Sis (Forestry) closed belatedly on the outside from next-to-last to grab the show by a head. Show was worth $4.20 and the $1 trifecta came back $80.50 with the 7-1 fifth choice. Shermeen (Ire) (Desert Style) moved into contention between horses in the lane but had to steady late. After an inquiry, the stewards allowed the result to stand. The bay mare finished off the $1,009.40 superfecta ($1) (4-7-1-8) at 32-1. I Can See (Flying Chevron) was another length back and followed by Alexandra Rose, Trick's Pic (Favorite Trick), Loyal Bounty (Loyal Double) and Live Life (Fr) (Linamix). Costume captured her initial stakes race, following fourth-place finishes in each of her American starts -- the Garden City S. (G1), Queen Elizabeth II Invitational Challenge Cup S. (G1), Mrs. Revere S. (G2) and San Gorgonio H. (G2). The filly was second in the Oak Tree S. (Eng-G3) in her British finale, and improved her lifetime line to 11-2-1-3, $219,271, following this score. Bred in Great Britain, the bay miss is the first foal from the Group 3-winning Dance Dress (Nureyev) and has an unraced three-year-old half-sister named Party Frock (Oasis Dream [GB]). Dance Dress is closely related to stakes heroine and multiple Group 1-placed Most Precious (Nureyev), who is responsible for 1996 Ramona H. (G1) victress Matiara (Bering [GB]), stakes winner Precious Ring (Bering [GB]), Group 2 star Marathon (Diesis [GB]) and 2002 Fort Marcy H. (G3) victor Pyrus (Mr. Prospector).
