Anna makes short work of Hillsborough foes Frank Calabrese's homebred DREAMING OF ANNA (Rahy) grabbed her customary spot on the front end when the gates opened in Saturday's $175,000 Hillsborough S. (G3) and was never threatened, registering a 6 3/4-length score at Tampa Bay Downs. The four-year-old filly notched her eighth stakes win while improving her overall mark to 13-9-2-1, $1,853,172, and the Wayne Catalano-trained miss completed about 1 1/8 miles over the yielding turf in 1:52. "I was very confident today -- she was training unbelievable," Catalano said. "That's the reason why we came (to Tampa Bay Downs)." Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Dreaming of Anna established fractions of :24, :49 2/5, 1:13 2/5 and 1:39 while unhindered. She paid $4.40, $4.40 and $4.80 as the 6-5 second choice. Lady Digby (Grand Slam), an 18-1 outsider, rallied from last for second and gave back $12.80 and $21.20, and it was 1 1/4 lengths back to the 36-1 Mary Louhana (GB) (Loup Solitaire), who returned $19.40 for the show. The exotics were worth $47.40 (exacta), $327.60 (trifecta) and $592.20 (6-4-1-2 superfecta). Lear's Princess (Lear Fan), the 4-5 favorite, settled into a good stalking position during the early stages but lacked a kick in the stretch, finishing another 3 3/4 lengths back in fourth. May Night (Gulch) and Maddy's Heart (Lion Hearted) rounded out the order of finish. Unbeaten from four starts at two in 2006, Dreaming of Anna garnered the Eclipse Award in near unanimous fashion. After scorching 5 1/2 grassy furlongs in 1:01 3/5 in the Tippett S., the chestnut thrashed males in the Summer S. (Can-G3) at Woodbine and wired the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) by 1 1/2 lengths. Her sophomore campaign in 2007 got off to a less than stellar start. She finished a distant third in the Old Hat S. (G3), second in the Gaily Gaily S. and sixth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). Dreaming of Anna turned things around with a clear score in the Double Delta S. on the turf at Arlington Park, then added the Virginia Oaks and Pucker Up S. (G3) to her resume. She wrapped up her season with a game runner-up effort in the Queen Elizabeth II Invitational Challenge Cup S. (G1). Dreaming of Anna opened her 2008 campaign with a victory in the February 16 Endeavour S. (G3) at Tampa. Out of the multiple stakes-winning Broad Brush mare Justenuffheart, the Kentucky-bred is a full sister to Lewis Michael, who captured the Washington Park H. (G2) last summer. She has a quarteet of younger half-siblings -- an unraced three-year-old colt named Justenuffhumor (Distorted Humor), an unnamed juvenile filly by Unbridled's Song, an unnamed yearling filly by Giant's Causeway and a 2008 colt by Storm Cat. Justenuffheart is herself a half-sister to 2004 champion turf horse Kitten's Joy (El Prado [Ire]) and multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Precious Kitten (Catienus). "We'll give her another race or two and then breed her," Calabrese said in regard to future plans.
