Bonfante rules late at Bay Meadows

Frankfurt Stables and Eugene Tenbrink's homebred BONFANTE (Fruition) capitalized on a wicked pace duel between Tribesman (Tribal Rule) and Vicarino (Vicar) and rolled home a 4 1/2-length winner of the $98,000 Bay Meadows Sprint H. (G3) on Saturday. Trained by Ron McAnally, the gelded seven-year-old rated in third behind sharp splits of :21 3/5 and :44, took command with ease approaching the final turn and powered home under Frank Alvarado, clocking the six-furlong feature in 1:09 1/5. Sent off at 6-1 in the four-horse field, the California-bred paid $15 and $5.40 while topping the $66.60 exacta ($1).

Jack Hes Tops (He's Tops) was outrun early but benefited by the tiring early duelers to gain the place spot as the nearly 26-1 longshot, worth $16.80. Vicarino, the 6-5 second choice, won the duel with 3-5 choice Tribesman but could do not better than third, 2 1/2 lengths clear of the favorite. Double Action (Double Honor) was withdrawn.

Bonfante picked up his eighth career stakes win, with the 2007 San Simeon H. (G3) as his most notable triumph. The bay sports a 30-11-6-3 career mark, with earnings that now stand at $636,121. The winner was last seen finishing a game second to subsequent Grade 1 winner Ever a Friend (Crafty Friend) in the Impressive Luck H. Bonfante was produced from the unraced Tahoma Cat (Mountain Cat).
