Missit prevails in Providencia Three Chimneys Farm's MISSIT (Ire) (Orpen) wore down a game Sweeter Still (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar [Ire]) in the final yards to annex the $150,000 Providencia S. (G2) over the firm Santa Anita turf on Saturday by a nose. Trained by Ben Cecil, the bay miss, who was making her U.S. debut, tracked in third early before putting in her winning run beneath Victor Espinoza, clocking the one-mile affair in 1:34 4/5. The 5-2 lukewarm favorite paid $7.60, $4.80 and $3.20 while keying the $1 gimmicks: $16.40 exacta, $87.10 trifecta and $305.90 superfecta (4-7-1-8). Sweeter Still, the nearly 4-1 third choice, tracked early leader Briecat (Adcat) through fractions of :23 1/5, :47 1/5 and 1:11 3/5 before taking over in the lane. Staying on gamely in a fine runner-up showing, Sweeter Still was 1 1/4 lengths clear of third and paid $5.20 and $3.60. Bel Air Sizzle (Unusual Heat) made some progress in the lane to earn the show at 8-1, returning $3.60. Gorgeous Goose (Mongoose) was next at 7-2 to cap the super and was followed by Carnival Queen (GB) (Carnival Dancer), Theodora (Fusaichi Pegasus), Briecat, Starry Pursuit (Van Nistelrooy) and Porto Marmay (Ire) (Choisir). Snow Delicious (Maria's Mon) was withdrawn. Missit finished a close second in the Rockfel S. (Eng-G2) in her penultimate juvenile run last year, and also placed in the Radley S. in her freshman finale in England. She upped her bankroll to $148,925 from a 6-2-3-0 lifetime mark. The winner was bred in Ireland by Churchtown House Stud and attracted a bid of $68,259 at the 2006 Tattersalls October sale. She is out of the Shirley Heights mare High Spot.
