Mare blazes new Trail in Doubledogdare Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps Stable's homebred CARRIAGE TRAIL (Giant's Causeway) led wire-to-wire on Friday in the $125,000 Doubledogdare S. (G3) at Keeneland with Kent Desormeaux aboard. The Shug McGaughey-trained five-year-old moved to the front out of the gate and battled with Marquee Delivery (Marquetry) through a quarter in :25 1/5. She put that rival away by the time she posted a half-mile in :49, then drew off through splits of 1:12 2/5 and 1:36 1/5 to record a 1 1/4-length score while never challenged late. Carriage Trail was sent off the 9-1 fourth pick in the seven-horse field and gave back $21.20, $7.80 and $5.40 for finishing 1 1/16 miles on the Polytrack in 1:42 2/5. "This filly, I tell you, we started running about the mile pole," Desormeaux said. "It wasn't that much of a theft from there, she had to be a racehorse. When you see us quickening in the replay at the half-mile pole, she actually was able to get a second breather. When she cornered for home, she just took flight and started reaching for the wire." Say You Will (Ire) (A.P. Indy) was best of the rest, crossing under the wire a half-length up on Indescribable (Pleasant Tap) to return $8.20 and $5 at 10-1. Show was worth $3.20 as the 5-2 second pick, and the exotics returned $138.20 (exacta), $594 (trifecta) and $2,703.60 (4-2-3-5 superfecta). Meribel (Peaks and Valleys) followed in fourth, while Marquee Delivery, I'm in Love (Zafonic), and even-money favorite Panty Raid (Include) completed the order under the wire. "We were laying second and when it came time to run, she ran for about an eighth of a mile and that was it," jockey Garrett Gomez said of Panty Raid. "That's about all I can say." Carriage Trail earned her first stakes score in the Doubledogdare, adding it to a record that already showed a third in last year's Humana Distaff S. (G1). The Kentucky-bred bay improved her line to 10-4-1-2 with this one and has now banked $228,566. Out of the multiple Grade 3-placed Manoa (Seeking the Gold), Carriage Trail has an unraced juvenile half-brother named Southern Alliance (Dixie Union) and a yearling full brother called Precipice Trail.
