Criminologist solves the Beaugay Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable's homebred CRIMINOLOGIST (Maria's Mon) wore down pacesetter All Is Vanity (Fr) (Gold Away [Ire]) inside the final sixteenth of a mile to post a professional, half-length tally in the $106,200 Beaugay H. (G3) at Aqueduct on Saturday. The exciting gray broke well but settled on the outside in fourth while the leader set splits of :24, :48 and 1:11 2/5 for the opening six panels. Turning for home, Criminologist got closer and was traveling well under John Velazquez, eventually going by the leader under moderate urging to clock the 1 1/16 miles on the firm lawn in 1:41 2/5. The 4-5 favorite was worth $3.70, $2.50 and $2.10 while keying the $11.20 exacta and $28.20 trifecta (5-2-3) for conditioner Shug McGaughey. All is Vanity, making her second start on U.S. soil, didn't make it easy for the winner and displayed courage while retaining the place spot as the 5-2 second choice. The runner-up gave back $3.50 and $2.80. Factual Contender (Thunder Puddles) tracked the early tempo but could do no better than third, 6 1/4 lengths clear of her nearest foe. The nearly 7-1 third choice paid $3.20. Sweet Ransom (Red Ransom) and Just Little (Fr) (Grand Slam) completed the field. Criminologist earned her fourth impressive stakes win, followed by facile triumphs in the Cardinal H. (G3), Athenia H. (G3) and Perfect Sting S., all in 2007. The budding superstar improved her lifetime mark to 17-8-4-1, including a nifty 11-7-2-0 record on the grass, with earnings of $462,663. The five-year-old mare is the initial stakes winner out of the Grade 3-placed Search Party (Seeking the Gold) and has a pair of half-brothers, a two-year-old named Rescue Squad (Dynaformer) and a yearling named Look About (Tiznow).
