Street colt is the Boss of Los Angeles

Bluegate Corp., Headley and Naify's STREET BOSS (Street Cry [Ire]) ran in last during the early part of Saturday's $110,500 Los Angeles H. (G3) at Hollywood Park, came wide in the stretch and easily pulled off the victory in track-record time. Trained by Bruce Headley, the chestnut four-year-old was sent off the 7-5 favorite and returned $4.80, $3.40 and $2.80.

High Standards (High Brite) and last year's Los Angeles winner Sailors Sunset (Petionville) quickly showed to the front, dueling through early splits of :21 3/5, :43 4/5 and :55 2/5 while chased by Peace Chant (War Chant) and Bilo (Bertrando), who were involved in their own battle in the second wing.

Street Boss, in the meantime, was saving ground on the rail. The colt had broken well from the gate and was angled toward the rail by jockey David Flores when he suddenly stumbled, nearly going to his knees. Recovering quickly, he continued his progress over to the inside and continued to race along the rail along the backstretch. Sprinting through a hole in between horses rounding the turn, the chestnut circled his rivals entering the lane. Street Boss ran wide down the stretch and easily overhauled the defending champion, who had finally drawn off from High Standards, going on to post a one-length victory while finishing six furlongs on the Cushion Track in a track-record 1:07 2/5.

Sailors Sunset was 1 1/2 lengths up on High Standards to pay $9.40 and $7.40 as the 14-1 seventh pick, ending the $32 exacta ($1). High Standards was the 30-1 second longest shot on the board, returning $9.40 and finishing the $415.70 trifecta ($1). El Manuel (Chi) (Hussonet) completed the 3-6-1-7 superfecta ($1) that was worth $2,325.40, and was followed under the line by Bonfante (Fruition), Barber (Storm Boot), Peace Chant, Doppio (Gentlemen [Arg]) and Bilo.

The Kentucky-bred Street Boss began his career at Del Mar last September, breaking his maiden at first asking before running second in an allowance during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita. He finished out his three-year-old season during that meet and reappeared at Santa Anita in mid-January to score a five-length allowance victory. Since that one, Street Boss has recorded a neck second and two more wins, but was only making his stakes debut in this spot. With this victory, he now shows a 9-5-2-0 mark having banked $221,800 in lifetime earnings.

Bred by Brilliant Stables Inc., Street Boss sold for $300,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. He is out of the stakes-placed Blushing Ogygian (Ogygian), making him a half-brother to Habiboo (Unbridled's Song), runner-up in the 2005 First Flight H. (G2), as well as an unnamed two-year-old colt by Unbridled's Song and a yearling Speightstown filly.
