The outcome of the $250,000
Carry
Back S. (G2) at Calder on Saturday was much like that of the June 14
Unbridled S. though not as close. GOLDEN SPIKES (Seeking the Gold) held off the
late rally of Gentleman James (Yankee Gentleman) by a head in the Unbridled, but
extended that margin to three-quarters of a length in the Carry Back, collaring
his pacesetting rival late while completing six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 under Elvis
Trujillo. The 6-5 choice in a field of eight, Golden Spikes returned $4.60,
$3.20 and $2.40 while keying exotics of $20.80 (exacta), $58.40 (trifecta) and
$426.60 (2-4-7-6 superfecta).
Gentleman James broke on top and was allowed to set leisurely splits of :22
4/5 and :46 1/5. Holding a one length advantage after a quarter-mile, he soon
found himself pressured by both Carson's Legacy (Carson City) and Hyprocrite (Outofthebox),
and his margin was only a head after a half-mile. Golden Spikes, content to rate
in fourth as those two moved up toward the lead, angled out turning for home and
finished full of run down the middle of the track while Gentleman James dug in
along the rail to hold second by a half-length at 6-1, paying $5.60 and $3.20.
Lantana Mob (Posse), the 2-1 second choice, rallied from farther back to gain
third by 1 1/4 lengths and returned $2.40. Hypocrite completed the superfecta
and was followed under the line by Salute the Sarge (Forest Wildcat), Make Me
Zach (First Tour), Carson's Legacy and Successful Love (Successful Appeal).

"They didn't go as fast as I would have liked to see them go up front, but I
could see that they were moving too soon on the backside so I just sat behind
them and waited," Trujillo said. "With this horse the later you move the better
he finishes."
Bred in Kentucky by R.S. Evans, Golden Spikes was a $250,000 Keeneland
September purchase in 2006. Owned by M375 Thoroughbreds Inc. and the Saurez
Racing Stable, the bay colt has scored all four career victories at Calder.
Though unplaced in his first two graded attempts, Golden Spikes did run second
in the Illinois Derby (G2), but shortened up to sprinting when a distant fourth
in the Peter Pan S. (G2). His record improved to 10-4-2-0 with earnings of $372,
095. The Marty Wolfson trainee might now be pointed toward the August 23 King's
Bishop S. (G1) at Saratoga.
Golden Spikes is the first foal to race out of the winning A. P. Interest
(A.P. Indy), who has also produced the unraced two-year-old filly Credit Quality
(Elusive Quality) and an unnamed yearling colt by Distorted Humor. Golden
Spike's second dam, the Grade 1-winning Shared Interest (Pleasant Colony),
produced Grade 1 winners Forestry (Storm Cat) and Cash Run (Seeking the Gold).
This is the same female family that produced two-time Vosburgh S. (G1) winner
Sewickley (Star de Naskra).
