Well Armed is just that in San Diego

WinStar Farm's homebred WELL ARMED (Tiznow) led at every call in posting a convincing 1 1/4-length win in the $300,000 San Diego H. (G2) over the Polytrack at Del Mar on Saturday. Breaking alertly under Aaron Gryder, the 8-5 favorite carved out splits of :23 1/5, :46 4/5 and 1:10 3/5 to the top of the lane before opening up an insurmountable lead in midstretch, eventually clocking the 1 1/16 miles feature in a track record 1:41 2/5. Well Armed paid $5.40, $3.60 and $2.80 while spearheading the $1 gimmicks: $10.10 exacta, $51.70 trifecta and $814.80 superfecta (6-2-1-10) for conditioner Eoin Harty.

Surf Cat (Sir Cat) traveled well in hand early while saving ground, moved outside in early stretch and secured the place spot while never threatening the winner. The 4-1 third choice gave back $4.40 and $3.40. The late-running Mostaccoli Mort (Hold for Gold) was last after six panels but came home with good energy while widest of all to garner show honors another 1 1/4 lengths back. The nearly 10-1 fourth choice was worth $4.60. Mr. Napper Tandy (GB) (Bahamian Bounty) concluded the superfecta as the nearly 60-1 longest shot, and was trailed by 5-2 second choice Rebellion (GB) (Mozart [Ire]), Global Hunter (Arg) (Jade Hunter), Tall Texan (Point Given), You Got Me Rocking (Aljabr), Magnum (Arg) (El Compinche) and Racketeer (Awesome Again).

Well Armed was making his first appearance since finishing a game third in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) in March. The much-improved gelding continues to prove his affinity for synthetic going, racking up four wins from six tries including the San Antonio H. (G2) in early February. From a 17-5-2-1 career mark, the bay has become the newest member of the millionaire's club with earnings that now stand at $1,030,803. The Kentucky-bred was second in his 2008 debut, the San Pasqual H. (G2).

The winner is out of the stakes-winning Notebook mare Well Dressed, who is also responsible for an unraced three-year-old filly named O' Toole (Distorted Humor), an unraced two-year-old filly named Witty (Distorted Humor), an unnamed yearling filly by Tiznow and an unnamed 2008 filly by Speightstown. Well Armed is a half-brother to Travers S. (G1) third Helsinki (Distorted Humor) and hails from the same family as two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Symboli Kris S (Kris S.).
