Lawrence Goichman's homebred J'RAY (Distant View) delivered her trademark
late burst to score an emphatic victory in Sunday's $150,000
Matchmaker S. (G3), one of eight stakes events on the Haskell Day program at
Monmouth Park. Reserved far off a moderate early pace of :24, :47 3/5 and 1:11
2/5 by Joe Bravo, the Todd Pletcher mare circled the field turning for home.
J'ray took dead aim on 2-1 favorite Paris Winds (Ire) (Galileo [Ire]), who
briefly struck the front entering the stretch, and the race was over in a matter
of strides as the winner stormed 1 3/4 lengths clear. After stopping the
teletimer in a sharp 1:46 1/5 for nine furlongs on firm turf, J'ray gave back
$12.80, $5.80 and $3.80 as the generous 5-1 fourth choice.
The 6-1 Dyna's Lassie (Dynaformer) got up for second by a neck over Cozzi
Capital (Cozzene), returning $7.40 and $5.20. Cozzi Capital, a nearly 45-1
longshot, rewarded her loyalists with $13.60 to show. The $1 exacta was worth
$50, the $1 trifecta paid $938.90 and, with Paris Winds fading to fourth, the
3-6-1-5 superfecta ($1) totaled $4,712.10. Social Queen (Dynaformer) came next,
followed by the early leader Eclisse (Fr) (Ski Chief), Waquoit's Love (Not for
Love) and the dead-heating pair of Dancing Band (Dixieland Band) and Prop Me Up
(Reparations).

J'ray was recording her seventh career stakes victory. Successful in the
Jessamine S. and Selima S. as a juvenile, the chestnut added the Tropical Park
Oaks to her resume at three and the Bayou H. (G3), My Charmer H. (G3) and Marie
G. Krantz Memorial H. last season as a four-year-old. She has also placed in
seven other stakes, including the Mrs. Revere S. (G2), the past two runnings of
the Suwannee River H. (G3), and the Mairzy Doates H., where she was just gunned
down by Mauralakana (Fr) (Muhtathir [GB]). Her line now stands at 22-8-6-1,
$686,889.
J'ray is out of the winning Bubbling Heights (Fr) (Darshaan), who is a close
relative of 1993 Horse of the Year Kotashaan (Fr) (Darshaan), and has a 2008
half-sister by Street Cry (Ire). This is also the family of 2004 Appleton H.
(G3) winner and Manhattan H. (G1) runner-up Millennium Dragon (GB) (Mark of
Esteem [Ire]).
