Stardom Bound a fittingly named Debutante heroine

Charles Cono's STARDOM BOUND (Tapit), who had fallen short of winning in each of her first two starts, looked the winner for much of the stretch run in Monday's $250,000 Del Mar Debutante (G1). Coming fastest of all after trailing early, Stardom Bound easily swooped past tiring pacesetter Palacio de Amor (Dixieland Band) to register an emphatic 4 1/4-length victory in a time of 1:22 2/5 for seven furlongs on Polytrack. Stamping herself as California's leading juvenile filly, the 5-1 chance returned $13, $6.80 and $5 while keying the $1 exotics: $294.30 (exacta), $2,622.30 (trifecta) and $14,995.80 (4-1-2-3 superfecta).

Palacio de Amor rushed up from her inside post to grab an uncontested lead, setting splits of :22 2/5, :45 and 1:09 3/5. Despite the taxing early pace, the near 48-1 longshot still seemed full of run for much of the stretch, but the gray Stardom Bound, who began advancing around the far turn, made a five-wide bid down the stretch and locked up Debutante honors when no else from behind made a contending late kick. Palacio de Amor, leg-weary in the final yards, held on for second in a three-way photo and returned $47.40 and $21. Will O Way (Broken Vow), a 28-1 chance, rallied from eighth to get the show, good for $11.20. Evita Argentina (Candy Ride [Arg]), the 5-1 third choice, capped the superfecta.

Empressive Lady (Empire Maker), the near 5-2 favorite following a dominating maiden win, was well positioned throughout but settled for fifth after showing little stretch punch. She was followed under the line by Candilejas (Candy Ride [Arg]), Saucey Evening (More Than Ready), Glitter City (City Place), Montana Fields (Pulpit), Emmy Darling (Graeme Hall) and Trifecta King (Peace Rules). Turtle Creek Babe (Grand Slam) was pulled up on the turn and was vanned off.

"She was a little bit better coming out of the gate today. A little," winning jockey Mike Smith said. "Things come so easy to her. She was picking those horses up in the stretch without even trying."

Stardom Bound debuted in a July 20 maiden event at Del Mar, just missing by a nose after conceding the field 12 lengths early after breaking in the air. She was off slow again in the August 6 Sorrento S. (G3), rated closer to the pace, but again settled for runner-up honors when one length behind Evita Argentina. From her 3-1-2-0 line, Stardom Bound has now bankrolled $190,600. Trainer Chris Paasch indicated that the September 27 Oak Leaf S. (G1) at Santa Anita could be next on the filly's agenda.

Purchased for $375,000 at the OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Stardom Bound is out of My White Corvette, a stakes winner and Grade 2-placed daughter of Tarr Road. Stardom Bound counts as half-siblings a yearling colt by Roman Ruler and a 2008 filly by Lion Heart. Stardom Bound was bred in Kentucky by Fletcher Gray, Carolyn Gray and John Youngblood.
