Criminologist returns to winner's circle in Noble Damsel Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable's homebred CRIMINOLOGIST (Maria's Mon) moved into contention in early stretch and wore down a clear Waquoit's Love (Not for Love) by a head at the wire to annex the $111,700 Noble Damsel H. (G3) over the soft turf at Belmont Park on Saturday. The Shug McGaughey trainee broke well and settled in midpack as Waquoit's Love led the field through splits of :24 2/5, :49 and 1:13 2/5 for the opening six panels. Approaching the final turn, Edgar Prado placed the filly in the right spot to make her run and she responded, eventually clocking the one mile in 1:37 4/5 as the 6-5 choice. The winner paid $4.70, $2.90 and $2.50 while keying the $50.50 exacta, $183 trifecta and $664 superfecta (6-7-8-5). Waquoit's Love led for nearly every jump and finished well clear in second in a fine showing. The second placer gave back $9.50 and $5.90 at 13-1. European import SEFROUA (Kingmambo) closed well while wide to earn the graded placing in her U. S. bow, worth $3.50 as the 7-2 second choice. Trouble Maker (Labeeb [GB]) concluded the superfecta at 8-1 and was trailed by Nans Joy (Ire) (In the Wings [GB]), Classic Neel (El Corredor), Say You Will (Ire) (A.P. Indy) and Chestoria (Chester House). Cozzi Capital (Cozzene) was withdrawn. Criminologist broke her two-race losing streak by improving her lifetime mark to 20-9-4-1, $533,283 with this conquer. The gray mare had a superb year in 2007, winning five of six races at one point including the Athenia H. (G3), Cardinal H. (G3) and Perfect Sting S. The Kentucky-bred captured this year's Beaugay H. (G3) and exited troubled trips when seventh in the Just a Game S. (G1) and eighth in the Diana S.
