My Pal Charlie proves best in Super Derby B Wayne Hughes' MY PAL CHARLIE (Indian Charlie) impressively spurted clear of his foes at the head of the lane and crossed the wire 4 1/4 lengths in front in the $515,000 Super Derby (G2) at Louisiana Downs on Saturday. Breaking well under Curt Bourque, the bay colt settled just off the early tempo along the rail prior to delivering his winning run at the top of the lane, quickly opening up daylight and eventually stopping the teletimer in a solid 1:48 1/5 for the fast nine-furlong test. The 6-1 third choice was worth $15, $5.80 and $3.60 while keying the $36.80 exacta, $116.80 trifecta and $590.40 superfecta (2-3-10-9) for conditioner Albert Stall Jr. Macho Again (Macho Uno) tracked in midpack while inside and steadied slightly prior to the final turn, but the 6-5 favorite finished with good courage to secure place honors. The runner-up paid $2.80 and $2.20. Forest Command (Monarchos), the 2-1 second choice, had a perfect trip while tracking on the outside but couldn't match strides with the winner, ultimately falling a neck shy of second. Show was worth $2.80. Golden Yank (Yankee Gentleman) capped the superfecta at 12-1 and was followed by Stungbythestorm (Vindication), Real Appeal (Successful Appeal), Mambo Meister (King Cugat), King Darius (Eltish), Numismatist (Yankee Gentleman) and Star Production (Run Production). My Pal Charlie earned his first stakes win to improve his mark to 11-3-2-0, $534,163. The Kentucky-bred owns runner-up efforts in the Louisiana Derby (G2) and Northern Dancer S. (G3), trailing Pyro (Pulpit) on each occasion. Most recently, the colt finished fifth in the West Virginia Derby (G3). The winner was bred by John Penn and attracted $300,000 at the 2006 Keeneland September Yearling sale. He is out of Shahalo (Halo), making him a full brother to Grade 2 victor Bwana Charlie and a half-brother to 2007 El Camino Real Derby (G3) hero Bwana Bull (Holy Bull) and multiple stakes-placed Ten Halos (Marquetry). Shahalo is also responsible for an unraced two-year-old filly named Grimace (Vindication) and a yearling filly by Indian Charlie.
