Cost of Freedom ascends to Ancient Title score Gary and Cecil Barber's COST OF FREEDOM (Cee's Tizzy) shook free turning for home and held off a spirited run from the heavily favored Street Boss (Street Cry [Ire]) to capture the $250,000 Ancient Title S. (G1) over the Pro-Ride at Santa Anita on Saturday. Claimed for $50,000 just two starts prior by conditioner John Sadler, the five-year-old gelding broke sharply and rated just off the pace while wide prior to spurting to a clear edge at the top of the lane. As jockey Tyler Baze urged his mount, Street Boss was uncoiling his customary late rush, but the latter was left with too much to do. "It was a gutsy claim," Sadler said. "Mr. (Gary) Barber liked his race record. I was a little concerned that he hadn't run that many times, but he was always very good. My thought was just to give him plenty of time. If you give him that spacing back -- we had a lot of time between races -- that helps your chances. I was worried about him bouncing. Obviously, we held him up. "Thirty days (between now and the Breeders' Cup Sprint [G1]) looks a little close at this point, but he should be fine," Sadler added. The winner sped six furlongs in a brisk 1:07 2/5 and returned $13.60, $4.80 and $2.80 while a half-length clear on the line as the 5-1 fourth choice. "Street Boss was the horse to beat and I wanted to get the jump on him," Baze admitted. "At the five-sixteenths pole, I looked behind me and decided to go and it worked out perfect. He's a very classy, very nice horse." Street Boss ran valiantly in defeat and gave back $2.60 and $2.10 while completing the $15.30 exacta ($1). In Summation (Put it Back) looked to have plenty in the tank while behind a wall of runners entering the final turn, but the nearly 3-1 second choice could not quicken with the top pair and had to settle for the show spot. The third placer gave back $2.60 while capping the $40.20 trifecta ($1). The $1 superfecta (8-1-6-2) was good for $111.50 with Delta Storm (Storm Boot) well back in fourth. Idiot Proof (Benchmark) and Esperamos (Stormy Atlantic) completed the order of finish, while Decado (Ire) (Danehill Dancer) and Sailors Sunset (Petionville) were scratched. Cost of Freedom improved his lifetime line to 10-6-1-2 with earnings of $344,152. The dark bay finished second in the Tiznow S. against California-bred foes in his lone prior stakes venture. The winner was produced from Freedom Dance (Moscow Ballet) and has an unraced two-year-old half-sister named Freedom High (High Brite) and an unnamed 2008 half-brother by Kitten's Joy.
