Wasted Tears defends Ouija Board title

WASTED TEARS (Najran) took the lead from the start of Monday's $200,000 Ouija Board Distaff H. (G3) at Lone Star Park and was never headed en route to a game neck victory as the favorite under Clifton Berry. Bred, owned and trained by Bart Evans, the dark bay mare earned her sixth straight win while defending her title in this turf test, stopping the clock for eight furlongs on the firm going in 1:33 1/5.

Wasted Tears grabbed the advantage as soon as the gates opened, setting splits of :22 4/5, :46 1/5, 1:09 3/5 and 1:21 2/5 while closely tracked by Bubbler (Distorted Humor) throughout. As the pair entered the stretch, Bubbler continued to battle for the win, but could never reach the winner. Fortunia (Leroidesanimaux [Brz]) bided her time in the back before putting in a five-wide rally to get up and just miss on the line while easily securing second.

Sent off the 1-5 favorite, Wasted Tears paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10 while keying the $29 exacta, $62.20 trifecta and $261.80 superfecta (5-6-1-2). Fortunia, the 14-1 fifth choice in the six-horse field, gave back $6.20 and $3.20 for her game run, and it was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Bubbler, who returned $2.20 as the near 3-1 second pick. The Cat Who (Magic Cat), Love to Tell (Stage Colony) and Slide on Bye (Smart Strike) completed the order under the wire.

Wasted Tears flashed ability on the Retama Park turf as a juvenile, capturing her debut and finishing a troubled runner-up in the 2007 La Senorita S., but really excelled with maturity. The Kentucky-bred kicked off her winning streak in her 2009 bow in an allowance at Lone Star Park. Next time out at the same venue, she wired the Ouija Board Distaff in a course-record 1:32.81 for the mile.

Not seen in competition again as a four-year-old, Wasted Tears returned on January 28 and picked up right where she left off with an allowance/optional claiming score at Gulfstream Park. That served as the ideal prep for the February 20 Honey Fox S. (G3), which she captured in her trademark fashion, and she scored her biggest win to date when defeating champion Forever Together (Belong to Me) last time in the Jenny Wiley S. (G2) at Keeneland. This second Ouija Board win improved her record to 15-10-1-0, $558,598.

Produced by the stakes-winning Wishes and Roses (Greinton [GB]), Wasted Tears is a half-sister to stakes victors Wishingitwas (Sandpit [Brz]) and Almost Certain (Favorite Trick), as well as an unraced juvenile colt named If Ever (Thunder Gulch). Wishes and Roses is herself a half-sibling to Grade 3 heroine Bully Bones (Hesabull) and Irish listed winner Approvance (With Approval).

Wasted Tears' fifth dam is the noted matron The Garden Club (*Herbager), whose children and grandchildren include the likes of Grade 2 victress Up the Flagpole (Hoist the Flag), Broodmare of the Year Prospectors Delite (Mr. Prospector) and Grade 2-winning sire Top Account (Private Account).
