Miss Singhsix edges Morena in Obeah Team Valor International's MISS SINGHSIX (Ire) (Singspiel [Ire]) outstayed seven rivals in Saturday's $151,050 Obeah S. (G3) at Delaware Park, the main local prep for the $750,000 Delaware H. (G2) on July 17. Under Jose Valdivia Jr., the five-year-old mare rallied from last to reach contention at the top of the stretch, then steadily wore down second choice Morena (Per) (Privately Held) to prevail by a neck. The 2-1 favorite, Miss Singhsix returned $6.60, $3.40 and $2.80. The 12-1 Stage Trick (Distorted Humor) attempted to lead throughout from her inside draw, setting uncontested splits of :23, :47 2/5 and 1:11 4/5. Though stalkers Platinum (Mineshaft) and Mindy Sue (Pleasantly Perfect) folded after proving incapable of catching the speed, Stage Trick ultimately ran out of gas herself and weakened in the final furlong. Morena, seventh early, slipped up the inside rounding the second turn then switched outside of Stage Trick for the stretch run. Meanwhile, Miss Singhsix made a bold four-wide move turning for home, and it came down to these two. After making a brief lead inside the eighth-pole, Morena ceded the lead to Miss Singhsix in the final yards. The final time for nine furlongs over a fast track was 1:50 4/5. Morena finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Stage Trick, and gave her supporters $3.80 and $2.80. Stage Trick was worth $7.40 and finished 5 1/4 lengths clear of 16-1 chance Miss Match (Arg) (Indygo Shiner). The exotics paid $24.40 (exacta), $165.20 (trifecta) and $1,262.60 (5-10-1-4 superfecta). Following Miss Match were Mindy Sue, Taptam (Pleasant Tap), Platinum and War Echo (Tapit). Pumpkin Shell (Lion Heart) and Jessica is Back (Put It Back) were scratched in favor of the Ogden Phipps H. (G1) at Belmont and Fleur de Lis H. (G2) at Churchill, respectively. This was the first graded win for Miss Singhsix, who was bred in Ireland by John O'Connor and sold as a yearling for $18,000 at Goffs December. She placed in the El Encino S. (G2), Torrey Pines S., Santa Lucia H. and Nancy's Glitter S. earlier in her career, and finally registered her first black-type score in the Maryland Racing Media S. at Laurel on February 20. She preceded this win with third-place finishes in the Rampart S. (G3) and Sixty Sails H. (G3). Her record now stands at 19-5-3-3, $317,138. Produced from the winning Whatamiss (Miswaki), a half-sister to the Grade 2 winner Star of the Crop (Relaunch), Miss Singhsix counts as a half-brother the Grade 3-placed stakes winner Silver Lord (Unbridled's Song). Miss Singhsix's second dam was the Grade 1-winning producer Convenience (Fleet Nasrullah), ancestress of Grade 3 winners Concept Win (Manila), Closeout (Repriced) and Capital Request (Repriced), while her third dam was Broodmare of the Year *Moment of Truth II (Matador), who also produced French Group 2 winner Night Alert (Nijinsky II), 10-time stakes winner Indulto (Royal Coinage) and stakes winners Proliferation (Warfare) and Puntilla (Never Bend).
