Favorite Trick, Saratoga Six die in barn fire in New Mexico FAVORITE TRICK (Phone Trick), SARATOGA SIX (Alydar) and GONE HOLLYWOOD (Gone West) died Tuesday night in a barn fire at JEH Stallion Station near Hondo, New Mexico. Three Quarter Horse stallions were also killed in the blaze. Favorite Trick was undefeated in eight starts as a two-year-old and was named the 1997 Horse of the Year, the first juvenile to earn that honor since Secretariat in 1972, as well as champion two-year-old. Trained by Pat Byrne, the dark bay won the Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga and concluded the season with a 5 1/2-length victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Hollywood Park. At three, Favorite Trick won four of eight starts, including the Jim Dandy S. (G2) at Saratoga and the Keeneland Breeders' Cup Mile S. (G2) on the turf. He retired to stud at Walmac International near Lexington, Kentucky, with a record of 16-12-0-1, $1,726,793. Favorite Trick is represented by four stakes winners this year, including undefeated Kentucky Breeders' Cup S. (G3) winner Datrick and Texas Glitter H. winner Yucatan. To date, the 11-year-old stallion has sired at least 118 winners from 168 starters who have earned more than $6.7 million. His 2006 stud fee was $4,000. Favorite Trick died shortly after 1997 champion two-year-old filly Countess Diana, who also was trained by Byrne, was euthanized following surgery. Saratoga Six, a $2.2 million yearling, was undefeated in four starts as a two-year-old. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee was retired after winning the 1984 Del Mar Futurity (G1). He earned $304,940. Saratoga Six is the sire of more than 35 stakes winners, including Grade 1 winner Toga Toga Toga. To date, the 24-year-old stallion has sired at least 381 winners from 508 starters who have earned more than $24.5 million. Gone Hollywood is the sire of multiple stakes winner Hollywood Gone. To date, the 12-year-old stallion has sired 9 winners from 15 starters who have earned more than $349,000.
