Stardom, championship cemented in Juvenile Fillies

Those in the market to buy a champion Thoroughbred should make their way to Lexington, Kentucky, on November 2 for the Fasig-Tipton Selected Mixed Sale. Scheduled to go through the ring will be the stock of owner Charlie Cono, and among them, tentatively, his soon-to-be champion two-year-old filly STARDOM BOUND (Tapit), who likely sealed divisional honors with another romp against Grade 1 company in Friday's $1,832,000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Following up on devastating scores in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) and Oak Leaf S. (G1), the gray streak showed her typical burst of speed from the back rounding the second turn and drew off in the stretch for a convincing 1 1/2-length win under Mike Smith. The 8-5 favorite returned $5.20, $3.20 and $2.20.

A naturally slow starter, Stardom Bound had only one rival beaten after a half-mile as C. S. Silk (Medaglia d'Oro) held a lead through fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 4/5 over the quick-playing Pro-Ride surface. C. S. Silk's advantage diminished to a head after three-quarters in 1:09 4/5, but Be Smart (Smarty Jones) and Palacio de Amor (Dixieland Band), who had been tracking right behind the leader, were also tiring. Meanwhile, Stardom Bound began to make her customary bold move around the turn, and just inside the three-sixteenths pole made the lead and was not seriously threatened thereafter.

"Even though I got pinched at the start, she got away in pretty good order," Smith said. "She was on the right lead. Believe it or not, I was very confident down the backstretch. Every time I moved my finger, she was right there. It was a matter of pulling the trigger."

Dream Express (Bernstein), sent off at 12-1 despite a last-out victory in the Alcibiades S. (G1), did not have the acceleration of the winner, but still made up considerable ground from 11th to finish well out in the middle of the track and garner place honors by 1 1/2 lengths. She paid $8.80 and $5.20 while completing the $24.50 exacta ($1). Sky Diva (Sky Mesa), the near 4-1 second choice, edged 64-1 longshot Dave's Revenge (The Cliff's Edge) for the show, returning $3.60. The $1 trifecta brought back $77.90 and the $1 superfecta paid $2,538.90 (10-12-4-7). Persistently (Smoke Glacken), Van Lear Rose (Stroll), C.S. Silk, Black Magic Mama (Black Mambo), Evita Argentina (Candy Ride [Arg]), Doremifasollatido (Bernstein), Pursuit of Glory (Ire) (Fusaichi Pegasus), Be Smart and Palacio de Amor followed in that order under the wire.

"Her late run is devastating. She tears their hearts out," winning trainer Christopher Paasch remarked. "In three straight Grade 1 races now, she come from 15 lengths out of it and won exactly like she did today."

Stardom Bound kicked off her career with a nose defeat in her debut going 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar, and again took runner-up honors in the Sorrento S. (G3) in her next start. Beginning with the Del Mar Debutante, Stardom Bound has proven unstoppable, winning that seven-furlong fixture by 4 1/4 lengths, and then stretching out successfully to take the 1 1/16-mile Oak Leaf by 3 1/2 lengths. Stardom Bound's record now stands at 5-3-2-0, $1,420,600.

Purchased for $375,000 at the OBS March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Stardom Bound is out of My White Corvette, a stakes winner and Grade 2-placed daughter of Tarr Road. She counts as half-siblings a yearling colt by Roman Ruler and a 2008 filly by Lion Heart. Stardom Bound was bred in Kentucky by Fletcher Gray, Carolyn Gray and John Youngblood.
