Training center, Barn 27 added to quarantine

A training center in Western Kentucky and Barn 27 at Turfway Park were added to the quarantine of facilities with horses who have been confirmed as positive for the herpes virus. Three horses at Turfway have been confirmed as affected by the neurological Equine Herpesvirus-1 infection, with two being euthanized as their conditions deteriorated. The third horse survived the infection and continues to recover.

Two horses at the training center came up positive after a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test was performed. The testing was also performed on horses in Barn 27 at Turfway Park, with a positive result for one horse, and the Turfway Pony Barn, also showing one horse positive by PCR and another described as suspicious.

The horses in Turfway's Pony Barn and Outrider's Barn, which was added to the quarantine earlier in the week after one of them exhibited a fever, were moved from the track and placed in a quarantine facility off the grounds. The horse with the fever later tested positive for EHV-1 and was one of those euthanized. Three of the remaining six horses from the Outrider's Barn have shown evidence of the virus.

Barn 26, where the virus was originally detected, shows EHV-1 present in six horses. Selected horses from that barn have been allowed restricted access to the track for training after the day's normal training hours, with measures in place to prevent them from having contact with other horses on the grounds.
