AQUEDUCT NOTEBOOK

FEBRUARY 14, 2013

by John Mucciolo

There were no graded events over the weekend at the Big A.

Track Stats

A total of 18 races were held at the Jamaica, New York venue, with favorites winning at a 39 percent rate and the top two betting choices combining for 78 percent of the wins during the week. Seven were won in wire-to-wire fashion (39 percent).

The inner oval was very speed-favoring on Sunday in the muddy conditions, with five horses leading at every call from nine races, and another two pressing the pace in second en route to victory.

The Thursday card seemed much more balanced on the fast track, with all types coming home winners.

Meet Totals

RACES:   541
DIRT:   486
TURF:   55
FAVORITES:   203 (37 percent)
2ND CHOICES:   121 (22 percent)
TURF WIRE:   10 (18 percent)
DIRT WIRE:   138 (28 percent)

HORSES TO WATCH

Thursday (2/7)

3RD -- BLACK PEN (Tiznow) had little chance with the wire-to-wire winner who led throughout in here, but the six-year-old came home well to be a clear second from slightly off the pace. The six-year-old gelding will be tough with a repeat of that one for conditioner David Jacobson.

4TH -- PAPA TOM (Utopia) roared home to a most impressive score on this day for trainer Rodrigo Ubillo, powering clear to a 10 3/4-length win beneath Eddie Castro. We're not sure of the class of competition this one crushed today, but we will surely give this improving sort a look right back.

8TH -- B SHANNY (Street Cry) was all heart in this one in holding off the runner-up in a stretch-long duel for trainer Michael Hushion. The dark bay gelding had gone off form for a pair of races, but it seems as the little layoff did wonders for him on this occasion.

Sunday (2/10)

2ND -- SMOLDERING BEAUTY (Smoke Glacken) certainly thrived on this muddy oval in here, as the four-year-old filly was never challenged en route to a powerful wire-to-wire tally in a swift final time. The Kelly Breen pupil could be stakes bound in the very near future.

A Look Ahead

There are no graded stakes upcoming at Aqueduct.
