Animal Kingdom works, Dawn Approach confirmed for Royal Ascot

Animal Kingdom  put in his final fast work on Wednesday in preparation the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot June 18. The five-year-old chestnut went five furlongs in 1:03 under jockey Paul Carberry at trainer David Lanigan's Kingsdown yard in Lambourn.

"It went well," said trainer Graham Motion, who was in England to oversee the work of the Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner. "I wasn't looking for a real hard work for him. I wanted him to do something within himself, and I think it went very smoothly. I was very pleased. It was kind of similar to what we did with him before the Breeders' Cup."

Animal Kingdom will attempt to become the first horse to complete the Kentucky Derby, Dubai World Cup and Royal Ascot hat trick. For footage of the work, visit HRTV.com.

In a surprise move, Dawn Approach will bid to bounce back from his Epsom Derby debacle in Tuesday's St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, it was confirmed Wednesday. Initially slated for a break after losing his unbeaten record in the June 1 blue riband, Jim Bolger's trainee will bid for redemption dropped back down to a mile on the meet's opening day.

"He's been left in the St James's Palace and, subject to a satisfactory piece of work (Thursday), he is an intended runner," Bolger told godolphin.com.

Racing manager Simon Crisford added, "Jim is very happy with how Dawn Approach has done since the Derby and he is keen to let him run at Royal Ascot if everything continues to go well with his preparation between now and the race. We had a discussion this morning and decided to let him run if he pleases in his work. Jim has been delighted with how relaxed Dawn Approach has been in his training."
