Country Star heads Pool 2 of Oaks Future Wager

Country Star will never have raced on dirt prior to the Kentucky Oaks (Benoit Photo)
Multiple Grade 1 heroine COUNTRY STAR (Empire Maker), who has yet to make her 2008 debut, closed as the 5-1 favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager on Sunday evening. The Bobby Frankel trainee began her career with a runner-up effort in a grassy maiden special weight event at Belmont Park. She burst onto the two-year-old scene with a sharp victory in the Alcibiades S. (G1) over Keeneland's Polytrack next out. The dark bay lass was last seen capturing the December 15 Hollywood Starlet S. (G1) on Hollywood Park's Cushion Track by 2 3/4 lengths. Country Star is expected to reappear in the April 5 Ashland S. (G1) at Keeneland.

Not far back in the wagering is PROUD SPELL (Proud Citizen), who closed at 6-1 after finally turning the tables on the previously unbeaten champion INDIAN BLESSING (Indian Charlie) in Saturday's Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). Prior to that one, the Larry Jones trainee had finished behind her rival when second in the Silverbulletday S. (G3) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Indian Blessing closed as the co-fourth choice at 8-1 in Pool 2, but her status for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) is in limbo, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday.

The third most popular filly at closing time was PURE CLAN (Pure Prize). Like Country Star, the Bob Holthus-trained chestnut has yet to make her sophomore debut and remains perfect from four starts as a juvenile. Her last race came as a two-length score in the November 24 Golden Rod S. (G2) at Churchill Downs.

Rounding out the top five was EIGHT BELLES (Unbridled's Song), who was the co-fourth pick at 8-1. Also trained by Jones, the gray miss posted a 15-length allowance victory in her three-year-old bow on January 21 before recording a dominant 13 1/2-length win in the February 17 Martha Washington S.

The all other three-year-old fillies entry closed at 9-1 to conclude the single-digit betting interests in Pool 2.

A total of $62,503 was wagered during the four-day pool, the largest Pool 2 total since the Oaks Future Wager went to a three-pool format in 2004. This year's figure was up 11.9 percent over 2007, when $55,840 was wagered on Pool 2. The third and final pool will take place April 3-6.
