Langfuhr colt tops opening session at Keeneland

Tuesday's session topper equaled a world record when
breezing an eighth-mile in :9 3/5

A colt by Langfuhr sold for the top price of $700,000 to Jess Jackson's
Stonestreet Stables at Tuesday night's opening session of the Keeneland April
Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale in Lexington, Kentucky. The session-topper was
consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent.
Cataloged as Hip No. 7, the gray
colt is a half-brother to Fountain of Youth S. (G2) winner Cool Coal Man
(Mineshaft), who is expected to make his final start before the May 3 Kentucky
Derby (G1) in Saturday's $750,000 Blue Grass S. (G1). He is out of the winning
Rubiano mare Coral Sea, who has also produced stakes winner Kathleens Reel
(Lemon Drop Kid).
Coral Sea is a three-quarter sister to multiple Grade 3 winner and
$429,108-earner Signal Tap (Fappiano), and the dam of stakes winners Destiny
Calls (With Approval) and You'llbeinmyheart (Broad Brush). This is the same
female family as English and Irish champion Storm Bird (Northern Dancer).
At Monday's under tack preview, the colt breezed an eighth-mile in :9 3/5,
which equaled the world record for the distance at a juvenile sale. The colt
previously sold for $135,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
"The pedigree was what I was most interested in," Jackson said. "The fact
that he showed early speed and was so precocious made him very interesting. We
think we got something very special. The people we were biding against (WinStar
Farm) know a thing or two about horses."
Jackson said the colt will be trained by Steve Asmussen.

"I'm very happy; he's a heck of a good colt," said consignor Niall Brennan.
"If his (half) brother wins the Blue Grass this weekend, they'll look very
smart."
The top-priced filly sold for $325,000 to Bear Stables. By Maria's Mon, the
gray lass is a full sister to Grade 1-placed Ilusoria, who has produced multiple
stakes winner Peak Maria's Way (Pyramid Peak) and stakes-placed Cajun Mon
(Jambalaya Jazz), and a half-sister to Unacloud (Unaccounted For), the dam of
2006 Matron S. (G1) heroine Meadow Breeze (Meadowlake). The filly is out of
Cloud's Ambre (Two Punch), a daughter of stakes-winning, stakes producer Arctic
Cloud (Yukon).
At the under tack preview, she breezed an eighth-mile in :10 1/5.
The filly, who was cataloged as Hip 6, most recently sold for $125,000 at
last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale. She was consigned by
Scanlon Training Center, agent.
The sales company reported 34 horses sold for $7,127,000. The average price
was $209,618 and the median price was $165,000. This year, the April sale format
was changed from one day to two evening sessions. As a result, there are no
comparable figures. The final session will take place Wednesday, beginning at 7
p.m. (EDT).
