Dogwood Stable's ATONED (Repent), fourth last out in the $500,000 Illinois
Derby (G2) on April 5, has bounced back from that effort in good order and will
run next in the $325,000 Lexington S. (G2) at Keeneland on Saturday, Dogwood
Stable President Cot Campbell announced Monday.
"Atoned has been training enthusiastically of late," Campbell said. "The colt
had a terrific work at Keeneland on Sunday morning -- breezing a half in :47.1
and galloping out five-eighths in :59.2. It's obvious he has great affinity for
the Polytrack surface, which causes us to want to run in Saturday's Coolmore
Lexington Stakes, a race well worth winning in its own right. It is also a nice
stepping stone to the Preakness S. (G1) on May 17."
The Todd Pletcher-trained Atoned, a stakes winner of $226,757, was second by
a neck two starts back in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3), which was his first start of
the year. Campbell stated that it's likely Edgar Prado would ride Atoned in the
Lexington, which is run at 1 1/16 miles.
Dogwood's other classics candidate, BLACKBERRY ROAD (Gone West), who was
unplaced in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G2) this past Saturday, did not show
his usual stretch punch, according to Campbell.
