Artie Schiller filly brings $90,000 at Keeneland

A dark bay filly by Artie Schiller topped Keeneland's ninth session of the November Breeding Stock Sale in Lexington, Kentucky, on Wednesday when knocked down to Bare Stable for $90,000.

Selling as Hip No. 3286, the February 20-foaled lass was consigned by Elise W. Kendall, agent, and is out of Love a Ruckus (Bold Ruckus), who captured the 2000 runnings of the La Prevoyante S. and Passing Mood S. during her three-year long career. Love a Ruckus is out of the black-type producing mare Apachee Love (Ire) (Apalachee), the dam of such stakes winners as Nithi (Wolf Power [SAf]), who has foaled Grade 3-placed stakes heroine Silver Nithi (Numerous), and Akure for Luv (Akureyri).

Just 10 hips later, the second highest price of the session, and the top price for an older horse, toured the sales ring as Hip 3296. The Kentucky-bred ABRAAJ (Carson City) sold as a stallion prospect from the consignment of Shadwell Farm to Rob McDonald for $75,000. Hero of last year's Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. (G2) and third in True North H. (G2), the six-year-old bay is out of the winning Kris's Intention (Kris S.), making him a full brother to Leelanau, who set a new track record at Churchill Downs when capturing the 2001 Kentucky Breeders' Cup S. (G3), and a half-sibling to stakes victor All Trumps (Grand Slam). Kris's Intention is herself a half-sister to Grade 2 heroine How About Now (Pentelicus).

Wednesday's highest-priced mare is from the same family as Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Well Armed (Frank Sorge/Horsephotos.com)

The highest priced mare brought $70,000 from Polo Green Stable, agent. Consigned as Hip 3002 by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, multiple stakes-placed SECRET BROOK (Montbrook) was sold in foal to Seeking the Dia on a March 27 cover. The six-year-old chestnut is out of stakes winner Argos Appeal (World Appeal), who also produced stakes victress Special Report (Notebook). This is the same family as Symboli Kris S (Kris S.), a dual Horse of the Year in Japan, and reigning Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) king Well Armed (Tiznow).

Numbers were down across the board for both session and cumulative totals. A total of 236 horses sold for $3,336,700 on Wednesday, a decline of 38.2 percent on last year when 232 equines brought $5,395,500. The average has dropped by 39.2 percent, from $23,256 to $14,139, while the median fell 33.3 percent, from $15,000 to $10,000.

So far in the 13-day sale, 2,022 horses have totaled $153,696,100, while bringing an average of $76,012 and a median of $32,000. Those numbers are off by 11.3 percent, 20.1 percent and 25.6 percent, respectively, over last year when 1,821 horses had sold for an aggregate $173,294,800, an average of $95,165 and a $43,000 median.

The November sale continues through Sunday, with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m. (EST). For more information, as well as live video of the sale, log onto keeneland.com.
