Bernardini colt brings $900,000 at Ocala PRINCE BERNARDINI (Bernadini) was gaveled down to Brushwood Stable for $900,000 on Tuesday at the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. Offered by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent, the Kentucky-bred sported Hip No. 572. The March 6 colt was produced by the winning Rooneys Princess (Deputy Minister), making him a half-brother to stakes winner Prince Rooney (Tale of the Cat) and the stakes-placed V. I. P. Princess (Thunder Gulch). The juvenile's second dam was the Hall of Fame mare Princess Rooney (Verbatim), the champion older female of 1984. Previously a $225,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling, Prince Bernardini worked one furlong in :10 at last week's under tack show. St. Elias & West Point Thoroughbreds went to $600,000 to secure Hip 548, a High Cotton son of the winning Keikik (Aloha Prospector). The March 2 Florida-bred was consigned by Ocala Stud. A half-brother to stakes winner St. Louis City (City Place), the colt sped a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 at the under tack show. A colt from the first crop of Group 2 Godolphin Mile winner Two Step Salsa brought a final bid of $420,000 from Conquest Stables. Consigned by Eisaman Equine, agent, the Florida-bred toured the ring as Hip 483. The March 5 juvenile was produced by the multiple stakes-placed Homesteader (Pioneering), a half-sister to stakes winner King and Crusader (Lion Heart). Previously a $20,000 OBS August yearling, the dark bay worked one furlong in :10 at the under tack show. Hip 506, a Henny Hughes son of the unraced Impart (Maria's Mon), was purchased by Bear Stables for $310,000. The March 5 Kentucky-bred was offered by Grassroots Training & Sales, agent. Impart is a half-sister to multiple Grade 3 Wiseman's Ferry (Hennessy), the sire of reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan. The juvenile's third dam, La Affirmed (Affirmed), produced Grade 2 winner Della Francesca (Danzig) and the Grade/Group 3 winners Caress, Bernstein and Country Cat -- all by Storm Cat. This extended family is also responsible for Outstandingly (Exclusive Native), the 1984 juvenile filly champion, as well as Grade 1-winning sire Sky Mesa (Pulpit) and noted steeplechaser Arcadius (Giant's Causeway). A $55,000 Keeneland September yearling, the chestnut worked one furlong in :10 1/5 at the under tack show. Business continued to be strong at the midway point of the four-day sale. On Tuesday, 208 horses sold for $13,091,500, an increase of 47.8 percent over the corresponding session in 2012 when 207 head sold for $8,855,000. The session average jumped 47.1 percent, from $42,778 to $62,940, while the median rose 33.3 percent, from $30,000 to $40,000. Cumulatively, 405 juveniles have sold for $24,841,000, a 51.6 percent rise over this point last year when 393 horses brought $16,388,000. The average is up 47.1 percent, from $41,700 to $61,336, while the median has risen 26.7 percent, from $30,000 to $38,000.
