Thewayyouare registers first winner

French champion Thewayyouare got off the mark as a freshman sire when Tomei captured Sunday's 2ND race at Churchill Downs. A homebred campaigned by Joe Pesci and trainer Wesley Ward, the 9-2 chance stalked the pace, put her head in front in midstretch, and pulled 1 3/4 lengths clear. Dylan Davis guided the second-time starter through 4 1/2 furlongs on the fast track in :52 3/5.

Tomei is the first registered foal from the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Teriffany, who is herself a daughter of Grade 1-placed Pesci. The Florida-bred finished seventh in her April 11 debut in a Keeneland maiden special weight and was dropped in for a $25,000 tag here.

Thewayyouare ranked as France's top two-year-old colt following a four-for-five campaign in 2007. A Group 1 winner of the Criterium International, he also landed the Prix Thomas Bryon and Criterium de Lyon. The Andre Fabre trainee was unplaced in a pair of French classics at three, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club. Joining Aidan O'Brien for an abbreviated four-year-old campaign, he finished fourth in the 2009 Prix Ganay in his penultimate start and retired with a mark of 9-4-0-0.

The exceptionally well-bred son of Kingmambo entered stud at Coolmore's North American arm, Ashford Stud near Versailles, Kentucky, but has since moved to their Irish headquarters. He currently stands for 4,000.

Thewayyouare is a half-brother to co-European champion three-year-old filly Peeping Fawn from the immediate family of champion Rags to Riches, who famously outdueled Curlin in the 2007 Belmont Stakes. Thewayyouare and Peeping Fawn's dam, the Group 1-placed Sadler's Wells mare Maryinsky, is herself a half-sister to Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour.

Aside from producing Rags to Riches, Better Than Honour is also responsible for the 2006 Belmont hero, Jazil; Grade 2 winner Casino Drive; and 2009 Breeders' Cup Marathon victor, Man of Iron.

Thewayyouare's second dam, 1982 Kentucky Oaks queen Blush with Pride, is likewise the dam of Group 2-winning stakes producer Smolensk and Group 3 scorer Turnberry Isle.

Thewayyouare's third dam is another Broodmare of the Year, Best in Show, whose numerous classy descendants include champions El Gran Senor, Try My Best, Malinowski and Xaar.
