Fasig-Tipton hosts 96th Saratoga Sale

Fasig-Tipton's 96th Saratoga Sale features yearlings by a number of the world's hottest sires. A total of 252 horses was cataloged for the boutique auction, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) in Saratoga Springs' Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion.

Record-setting patriarch Tapit and red-hot second-crop sire Uncle Mo, currently the top two on the North American sire list, have 13 apiece in the catalog. Curlin, who's been on a rampage himself of late, has a dozen yearlings on offer. Also with 12 cataloged are Into Mischief and the gone-to-soon Scat Daddy. Medaglia d'Oro rounds out the double-digit sires with 10.

Ghostzapper can't boast the same quantity in the catalog, but he does have one of the highest-profile yearlings in the whole sale: the half-sister to undefeated champion Songbird (Hip No. 61).

Racing phenom-turned-sire prodigy Frankel has a pair of Kentucky-breds available, a colt out of champion She Be Wild (Hip 148) and a daughter of J'ray (Hip 65). Frankel's all-conquering sire, Galileo, isn't left out of the Saratoga soiree either. He has two Irish-breds remaining in the sale, a colt out of the Grade 1-placed War Front mare Emerald Gold (Hip 20) and a filly out of a full sister to Chinese Dragon (Hip 104).

Tapit's youngsters include a full sister to Normandy Invasion (Hip 221); half-brothers to Princess of Sylmar (Hip 164) and Corfu (Hip 27); colts out of Great Hot (Hip 45), Lady of Fifty (Hip 72) and Aubby K (Hip 208); and a filly out of Her Smile (Hip 49).

Among the baker's dozen by Uncle Mo is a half-brother to Dance With Fate (Hip 30). Into Mischief's offspring include a full sister to Vicar's in Trouble (Hip 183), while Medaglia d'Oro has a half-brother to Carve and Sloane Avenue (Hip 203).

Bernardini's nine include a half-sister to Suddenbreakingnews (Hip 178), Broken Vow is responsible for a full brother to Rosalind (Hip 248), and Flatter has a half-sister to emerging blue hen La Traviata (Hip 120).

Awesome Again, Candy Ride, Distorted Humor, Giant's Causeway, Kitten's Joy, Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Pioneerof the Nile, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Street Cry, and War Front are among the established sires who are de rigeur at this venue.

Orb leads the first-crop brigade with eight cataloged, notably a three-quarter brother to Funny Moon (Hip 36) and a colt out of a half-sister to Suave (Hip 150). Fellow freshman Shanghai Bobby comes next, and his seven yearlings include half-brothers to Fish Trappe Road (Hip 17) and Teuflesberg (Hip 162).

Additional first-crop sires represented are Animal Kingdom; Declaration of War, who has an Irish-bred half-brother to Waterloo Bridge (Hip 92); Fast Bullet; Flat Out; Graydar; Liaison, whose only entrant, Hip 152, is a half-brother to Can the Man out of blueblood Smolensk; Oxbow; Paynter, who sired a half-brother to Peace and War (Hip 98) and a half-sister to the aforementioned She Be Wild (Hip 176); Point of Entry; Take Charge Indy; and Violence, who sired a three-quarter sister to Tasty Temptation (Hip 115).

Promising young stallions with first-crop juveniles hitting the track include Astrology; Bodemeister; Shackleford; Stay Thirsty; The Factor, who has a half-sister to The Big Beast (Hip 187); and Union Rags, who has a half-sister to Currency Swap (Hip 15).

According to The BloodHorse MarketWatch, Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale has retained its spot as the leading major North American yearling sale by percentage of Grade 1 winners, graded stakes winners, and stakes winners produced from horses sold.

And to drive the point home, the four Saratoga alumni who went on to earn Eclipse Awards in 2015 grace the catalog for this year's sale.

"Saratoga produced four Eclipse champions in 2015 – American Pharoah, Songbird, Stellar Wind, and Tepin – more than any other individual Thoroughbred auction in the world," Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning said. "And, not only are these horses great champions, they are arguably some of the most accomplished racehorses we've seen in some time – a testament to the type of quality our consignors offer at Saratoga.

"Another year of industry leading results both on the racetrack and in the sale ring in 2015 have attracted significant interest from sellers to Saratoga again in 2016," Browning added upon the release of the catalog. "Buyers will be presented with a tremendous group of yearlings when they arrive this year at the ‘Spa.' "

Hips 1-126 are set to tour the ring Monday evening. For the complete catalog, updates, and live video of the sale, visit fasigtipton.com.
