Meier, Wade injured at Hawthorne

Jockeys Randy Meier and Lyndie Wade were injured during the running of Hawthorne's 3RD race on Friday, while later on the card in the 6TH race, rider Tim Thornton was unseated from his mount.

In the 3RD race, Chestnut Gold (Horse Chestnut [SAf]), ridden by Wade, broke down coming out of the far turn. Arazi Exchange (Exchange Rate), with Meier in the irons, appeared to trip over her fallen comrade, tossing Meier to the ground.

Both riders were transported to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, Illinois. Wade was unconscious at the time, and remained unconscious at latest report on Friday afternoon (4:30 p.m. CST).

Meier injured his left shoulder and arm. It appeared that he had at least one, possibly more, fractures in that arm.

Chestnut Gold was euthanized following the race. Arazi Exchange, who was claimed out of the contest for $16,000 by Acclaimed Racing Stable, seemed to have escaped unscathed.

In the 6TH race, Thornton was thrown when his mount, Tough Tiz (Tiznow), stumbled leaving the starting gate. Thornton took off the rest of his mounts with soreness in his arm and abdomen.
