Pyro and War Pass lead Pool 2 of Future Wager

Recent Louisiana Derby (G2) winner PYRO (Pulpit) was bet down to 4-1 favoritism at the conclusion of Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager on Sunday evening. The brilliant sophomore concluded Pool 1 as the lowest individual entry at 5-1 and was bet down from his 6-1 morning line on this occasion. The Steve Asmussen charge exited his Saturday romp in fine fashion and is pointing toward a start in the $750,000 Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 12 at Keeneland, according to his trainer.

Champion War Pass, who beat Pyro three times last year, is now second choice to him in the Derby Future Wager (Eleanor Gustafson/Horsephotos.com)
Unbeaten champion WAR PASS (Cherokee Run) was the only other individual option in single digits when closing at 9-2. The Nick Zito pupil, who is unbeaten from five career starts including a facile score in his yearly debut, is expected to be heavily favored in the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on Saturday. War Pass closed at 6-1 in the opening pool.

The betting option for all other three-year-olds concluded the day at 6-1, up from the 3-1 status that it closed at in Pool 1.

Smart Southwest S. (G3) winner DENIS OF CORK (Harlan's Holiday) was the biggest market mover when closing at 12-1 for conditioner David Carroll. The unbeaten bay, who is likely for either the $300,000 Rebel S. (G2) on Saturday at Oaklawn Park or the $500,000 Lane's End S. (G2) at Turfway Park on March 22, closed at 46-1 in Pool 1.

EL GATO MALO (El Corredor), who suffered his first defeat in the recent Sham S. (G3), closed at 15-1, while Fountain of Youth S. (G2) third COURT VISION (Gulch) was next at 16-1. Sham hero COLONEL JOHN (Tiznow) and ELYSIUM FIELDS (El Prado [Ire]), a strong second in the Fountain of Youth, both closed at 17-1. VISIONAIRE (Grand Slam), who won the Gotham S. (G3) on Saturday, took late action on Sunday to conclude at 19-1 after showing up at 96-1 on Friday.

Total wagering on Pool 2 reached $325,306, down 14.3 percent from the $379,613 wagered in 2007. Pool 3 will take place April 3-6.
