Pyro works six furlongs

Louisiana Derby (G2) winner PYRO (Pulpit) worked six furlongs in 1:14 3/5 on Monday at Keeneland in preparation for the $750,000 Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 12. Exercise rider Dominic Terry was aboard Pyro, who worked in company with Fair Grounds maiden winner Sonoma Cat (Storm Cat). Pyro's jockey, Shaun Bridgmohan, was on Sonoma Cat.

The duo worked as a team, hitting the wire together with Pyro on the inside.

"I got him galloping out in 1:27 3/5 and the last five-eighths in 1:00 4/5," said assistant trainer Scott Blasi, who supervised the move for trainer Steve Asmussen, who was in Texas on Monday.

Keeneland clockers caught the pair going :23 flat for the final quarter, and :11 1/5 for the last eighth. It was Pyro's second work on Keeneland's Polytrack since arriving from Louisiana. Pyro worked five furlongs on his own in 1:02 2/5 on March 24.

"He looked great to me. I hadn't seen him in six weeks," added Blasi, who returned to the United States on Sunday night after being in Dubai with 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin (Smart Strike). Curlin added to his glowing resume with a resounding victory in Saturday's $6 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1).

Curlin is scheduled to return to the United States on Wednesday and then ship to Keeneland on Sunday after clearing quarantine at Belmont Park.

Pyro worked twice at Keeneland last fall prior to his runner-up effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). He began the year with an impressive last-to-first victory in the Risen Star S. (G3) on February 9, then captured the Louisiana Derby by an empathic three lengths on March 8 at Fair Grounds. The Blue Grass will be Pyro's first race on a synthetic surface and his final start before the May 3 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs. The Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred has a record of 6-3-2-1, $1,056,718.
