Gayego, Z Fortune will catch a plane to Kentucky

Arkansas Derby (G2) winner GAYEGO (Gilded Time), as well as second and third-place finishers Z FORTUNE (Siphon [Brz]) and TRES BORRACHOS (Ecton Park), will be flown to Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning to prepare for the May 3 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs. They head a group of eight scheduled to make the journey to Kentucky.

"He's doing good," said Martin Morales, assistant to trainer Paulo Lobo, Sunday morning, "...and he's ready for the next one."

Gayego, who made the successful transition from the California synthetic surfaces to Oaklawn Park's standard dirt strip, came out of the Arkansas Derby in fine shape. Both he and the Steve Asmussen-trained Z Fortune have sufficient graded earnings to make the Kentucky Derby field, but Tres Borrachos, whose third-place finish was worth $100,000, needs some luck to make the cut.

Lobo caught a pre-dawn flight out of Little Rock, Arkansas, to California, and will reunite with Gayago this week at Churchill Downs.

Z Fortune came out of his strong second in the Arkansas Derby in good shape, according to assistant trainer Kristin Crawford, who will remain at Oaklawn for two more weeks to care for Asmussen's Arkansas division.

Also tabbed for the Monday plane are Rebel S. (G2) runner-up KING'S SILVER SON (Mizzen Mast); MY PAL CHARLIE (Indian Charlie), second in the Louisiana Derby (G2); multiple stakes winner and Southwest S. (G3) third LIBERTY BULL (Holy Bull); Grade 2-placed BLACKBERRY ROAD (Gone West), who was a dead-heat seventh in the Arkansas Derby; and JAZZ IN THE PARK (Ecton Park), 10th in the Arkansas Derby.

On Sunday morning, the Tex Sutton 727 took INDIAN SUN (Indian Charlie), who finished fourth in the Arkansas Derby, and Sham S. (G3) third-placer VICTORY PETE (Five Star Day), who was scratched from the Arkansas Derby due to a leg injury, from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to California, then turned around and returned to Hot Springs to take the Arkansas Derby top three to Kentucky.
