Luzzi earns win number 3,000 Jockey Mike Luzzi, who guided Cowgirls Don't Cry (Pure Prize) to a front-running score in Saturday's Shuvee H. (G2), earned his 3,000th career victory in the very next race at Belmont Park. The milestone came in the 10TH race, when Luzzi piloted Michael Schrader's homebred Too Tough Pete (Good and Tough) to a 1 1/2-length tally. Trained by Richard Schosberg, the 5-2 favorite finished the six-furlong maiden special weight event in 1:11 1/5 on the fast track. "That's a nice milestone," said Luzzi, a 38-year-old native of Wilmington, Delaware, and grandson of the late, legendary trainer Virgil "Buddy" Raines. "I got my family here and they're all happy for me. It's been fun. "I'm not done yet. Maybe we can get a few thousand more. Anyway, we'll try for 3,001 tomorrow." Earlier, Luzzi recapped his trip aboard Cowgirls Don't Cry in the 32nd running of the Shuvee. "I got a clean break and she got out there easily," Luzzi said. "I hit her right-handed and she switched leads, so I didn't do that again. She got clear and I had horse." Luzzi won the Eclipse Award as the top apprentice rider in 1989, and he took home the riding title at the Aqueduct Spring meet in 2003. His major scores include the 2002 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) aboard Jilbab, the 2006 Go for Wand H. (G1) and Apple Blossom H. (G1) aboard Spun Sugar, and the 2006 Frizette S. (G1) aboard Sutra (Meadowlake).
