Diana to mark return of champion Wait a While

WAIT A WHILE (Maria's Mon), the champion three-year-old filly of 2006 who has not run since winning the San Gorgonio Handicap (G2) on January 14 at Santa Anita, is headed to Saratoga for the July 26 Diana H. (G1) at 1 1/8 miles on the turf according to Mike McCarthy, assistant trainer to Todd Pletcher.

Wait a While developed a callous on her left front tibia in March while training at Santa Anita, and came to Churchill Downs in the spring with McCarthy when Pletcher shipped his winter California contingent east. The five-year-old reappeared on the work tab for the first time since the injury on June 15 when she breezed three furlongs in :37 1/5 on the main track. She has followed that with :49 4/5 four-furlong dirt moves on June 22 and 29.

"We are going to be shipping horses back and forth (to Saratoga)," McCarthy said. "I imagine we would ship her up right before she runs. She will work here and then ship."

With the American Oaks Invitational (G1) and Yellow Ribbon S. (G1) among her five stakes wins during her championship campaign, Wait a While became the first to be awarded the three-year-old filly championship because of her turf prowess since polls began in 1936. She did, however, capture the Davona Dale S. (G2) and Sands Point S. (G3) on dirt that season. The latter was originally scheduled for the turf, but moved to the main track due to inclement weather.

Wait a While's career mark currently stands at 20-10-3-4 with earnings of $1,819,916.
