Black Mamba tops Mabee BLACK MAMBA (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) is clearly the one to beat in Sunday's $400,000 John C. Mabee H. (G1) at Del Mar. A smart 1 1/4-length winner of the Beverly Hills H. (G2) last out, the New Zealand import opened her U.S. racing career with an allowance victory over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course 12 months ago and then finished a good second to Precious Kitten (Catienus) in the Palomar H. (G2) at Del Mar. The John Sadler-trained five-year-old won't face the stiffest company in Sunday's 1 1/8-mile turf affair, and Garrett Gomez will return to the saddle. SOLVA (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) and GREEN LYONS (Ire) (Green Desert), the respective two-three finishers in the Beverly Hills, will both return in the Mabee, but PASSIFIED (GB) (Compton Place) is probably the top threat to Black Mamba. Trained by Jim Cassidy, the chestnut filly captured the San Clemente H. (G2) over the local course last summer and exits a solid fourth in the CashCall Mile (G2) at Hollywood Park. The big question for her is the nine-furlong distance. Regular rider Mike Smith will be up. Santa Barbara H. (G2) winner FOXYSOX (GB) (Foxhound) and multiple stakes heroine PLACID LAKE (Greenwood Lake) are also entered.
