Evita Argentina tops cast of 12 in Del Mar Debutante Unbeaten Sorrento S. (G3) heroine EVITA ARGENTINA (Candy Ride [Arg]) tops a 12-filly field entered in Monday's $250,000 Del Mar Debutante S. (G1), the Labor Day feature at the seaside track. The John Sadler trainee will clash once again with Sorrento runner-up STARDOM BOUND (Tapit), third EMMY DARLING (Graeme Hall) and fourth GLITTER CITY (City Place) in the seven-furlong event for juveniles. A debut maiden winner over CANDILEJAS (Candy Ride [Arg]) at Hollywood Park in June, Evita Argentina rallied from midpack to claim the Sorrento by one length from the slow-starting Stardom Bound. Alex Solis picks up the mount on Evita Argentina in the Debutante, while Mike Smith will reunite with the twice-placed maiden Stardom Bound. The Jeff Mullins-trained Glitter City crossed the wire third in the Sorrento, but she was disqualified for interfering with Emmy Darling and placed fourth. The two fillies have crossed swords twice before, with different results. Glitter City defeated Emmy Darling in a maiden race, but Emmy Darling turned the tables with a two-length score in the Landaluce S. at Hollywood. Glitter City will get a rider switch to Michael Baze, and Emmy Darling, who will run uncoupled with stablemate Evita Argentina, will stick with regular rider David Flores. While Sadler will be double-handed in the Debutante, Mullins will saddle three contenders -- Glitter City, Candilejas and EMPRESSIVE LADY (Empire Maker), who broke her maiden by a front-running 5 1/2 lengths last time out. Tyler Baze, who had previously piloted Evita Argentina, shifts his tack to Empressive Lady on Monday. Others to note include Cinderella S. victress TRIFECTA KING (Peace Rules), who was steadied sharply before dropping out of contention in the Sorrento; C.T.B.A. S. runner-up SAUCEY EVENING (More Than Ready); and recent maiden scorer MONTANA FIELDS (Pulpit). Del Mar will offer two other stakes on the Labor Day card, and each drew overflow fields of 14. Grade 1 veteran PERFECT DRIFT (Dynaformer), most recently fourth in a turf allowance/optional claimer, reverts to Polytrack for the $80,000 Windy Sands H. at one mile. The Richard Mandella campaigner will meet nine others in the main body of the field, with his chief opponents being Malibu S. (G1) winner JOHNNY EVES (Skimming) and Citation H. (G1) upsetter LANG FIELD (Langfuhr). A maximum of 12 California-bred two-year-olds can start in the $100,000 I'm Smokin S. Likely contenders in the six-furlong affair include Graduation S. and Solano County Juvenile S. winner BABS MOOSSA (Crowning Storm); TURBO CALL (Nineeleven), who has been chasing Babs Moossa; the undefeated Idaho shipper LORDGIVEMEALIFT (Lord Carson), who will be making his first start for Mullins; and the uncoupled Barry Abrams duo of MENSA HEAT (Unusual Heat) and BRUSHBURN (Unusual Heat).
