Sunline battling life-threatening laminitis SUNLINE (Desert Sun [GB]), the beloved Australasian superstar of the late 1990s and early 2000s, has developed a life-threatening case of laminitis, according to reports in the Australian Courier Mail and Herald Sun online at news.com.au. The 13-year-old mare underwent surgery for colic in July, and her battle with laminitis ensued as a complication. "She hasn't been in a good way at all," her former trainer Steve McKee told the Herald Sun. "We had a guy go over from Sydney to operate on her and cut the tendons in the legs, which changes the angle of the feet. We hope that will help her recover, but it's still too early to say." A three-time Horse of the Year in her native New Zealand and twice Horse of the Year in Australia, Sunline captured some of the most prestigious events on the racing calendar. The speedy bay won back-to-back editions of the Cox Plate S. (Aus-G1), along with two runnings apiece of the Doncaster H. (G1) and All Aged S. (G1), to list only a few of her major triumphs against males. Sunline also performed with great credit on the world stage, defeating local phenom Fairy King Prawn in the Hong Kong Mile (HK-G2) and finishing a close third to Jim and Tonic (Fr) and Fairy King Prawn in the Dubai Duty Free (UAE-G2). She retired from her glittering career in 2003, having won 32 of 48 starts and bankrolling more than A$13.3 million.
