Bob Black Jack is back for Underwood

Santa Anita Derby (G1) runner-up BOB BLACK JACK (Stormy Jack) will make his first start since an unplaced finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1) in Saturday's $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood S. (G3) at Hollywood Park. Trained by James Kasparoff, the sophomore colt reeled off consecutive stakes wins last winter before entering the Kentucky Derby trail with a third in the San Felipe S. (G2). The California-bred turned in a gallant performance in the Santa Anita Derby, grabbing the lead in midstretch before being passed in the final strides by Colonel John (Tiznow). He set the early pace in the Kentucky Derby before eventually weakening to 16th.

Bob Black Jack will face six rivals in the six-furlong Underwood with jockey David Flores. JOHNNY EVES (Skimming), winner of the 2007 Malibu S. (G1), is perhaps the most dangerous foe. The Jay Robbins trainee exits a runner-up finish in the California Cup Sprint H., and he'll be reunited with Garrett Gomez on Saturday. NOBLE COURT (Doneraile Court), winner of the 2007 San Vicente S. (G2), also merits respect. The four-year-old colt returned from a 13-month layoff with a 1 3/4-length allowance tally in his last outing on October 4. The John Sadler runner will retain the services of Mike Smith.

WIREDFORTWOTWENTY (Greatness), who was third in an allowance/optional claimer at Oak Tree most recently, will make his stakes debut for trainer Brian Koriner. SIX PACK ABS (Forest Wildcat), a smart allowance/optional claiming victor two starts back, will step up in class in good form for Sadler.
