Shadwell Stable homebred SHAKIS (Ire) (Machiavellian), who had been preparing for the November 28 Citation H. (G1), broke down after posting a four-furlong work in :49 1/5 over Hollywood Park's Cushion Track Friday morning. The eight-year-old was subsequently euthanized.

Produced from the winning Tawaaded (Ire) (Nashwan), Shakis spent the first two-thirds of his career overseas, first in France and then Dubai, and was runner-up three times in Group 3 company. His fortunes improved considerably when he was sent to the United States in 2007 to be trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, for whom he won his American debut and then finished third, beaten a neck, in the Manhattan H. (G1). Two races later, Shakis captured the first of consecutive renewals of the Bernard Baruch H. (G2), setting a course record of 1:45 1/5 for nine furlongs on turf, then concluded his campaign with a third in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).

Unplaced in his first three starts this year, Shakis got off the duck with a late-charging repeat score in the Baruch by three parts of a length. Third by the same margin to Big Brown in the Monmouth S. in his next start, Shakis then improved on his finish from the previous year with a second-place effort in the Shadwell Turf Mile. In his final start, Shakis trailed the field of 11 after a troubled trip in the October 25 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) at Santa Anita.

Shakis earned $860,362 from a record of 35-7-5-5.
