Habaya rallies for Miesque Shadwell Farm's homebred HABAYA (Storm Cat) rallied boldly to the lead in deep stretch and drew clear to a three-quarter length victory in Friday's $113,800 Miesque S. (G3), the first graded event of Hollywood Park's Turf Festival. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the two-year-old filly notched her first stakes tally when finishing up a mile on the firm ground in 1:37. A debut winner at Belmont Park in late September, Habaya was exiting a commendable runner-up finish in the Jessamine S. at Keeneland, and her line now reads 3-2-1-0, $135,000. The dark bay lass kept Richard Migliore in the irons on Friday and returned $6.80, $4.20 and $3.20 as the near 5-2 second choice. Last-out maiden winner Internallyflawless (Giant's Causeway), the 7-2 third choice among 12 rivals, offered a fine late run in her first start against winners to narrowly claim second and paid $4.60 and $3.80. It was a nose back to third-placer Eloquently (GB) (Dansili [GB]), who totaled $4.80 at 5-1. The $1 exotics yielded $14.40 (exacta), $69 (trifecta) and $187.50 for the 8-2-9-6 superfecta, which had 2-1 favorite Emmy Darling (Graeme Hall) another nose back in fourth in the crowded place photo. Dreamalong (Rahy), Atka (Swiss Yodeler), Pretty Katherine (Vindication), Kinesiology (Dixie Union), Century Park (General Meeting), Platinum Stiletto (Mr. Livingston), Ms. Lively (Mr. Livingston) and Grace Gryder (Decarchy) rounded out the order of finish. Bred in Kentucky, Habaya is the first foal to start out of 2002 champion turf mare Golden Apples (Ire) (Pivotal), winner of the Beverly D. S. (G1) and Yellow Ribbon S. (G1) during her championship season. A $1.6 million earner, Golden Apples is a half-sister to the stakes-winning and Grade 3 runner-up filly La Piaf (Fr) (Fabulous Dancer) and is also the dam of an unnamed yearling full sister to Habaya and a 2008 colt by A.P. Indy.
