Gray delivers a Delightful Kiss in Hal's Hope

There was no withstanding Delightful Kiss' powerful run in the Hal's Hope (Guy Gustafson/Horsephotos.com)

Hobeau Farm's homebred DELIGHTFUL KISS (Kissin Kris) was last of 14 after the opening half-mile of the $100,000 Hal's Hope H. (G3) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, but the 122-pound co-highweight had them all looking at his tail at the finish as the gray crushed his foes late by three lengths. Trained by Pete Anderson, the talented 5-1 third choice showed no speed and jockey Calvin Borel was content to let Finallymadeit (Concerto) lead the field through splits of :23 4/5 and :46 2/5 for the initial four furlongs. That one still led turning for home and in the lane, but he was noticeably tiring while Delightful Kiss was just warming up. The gelding clocked the one-turn mile on the fast main oval in 1:36 and returned $12.40, $5.80 and $4.40.

Bullsbay (Tiznow) was also well back early while wide and made a solid late run to gain the place spot by a half-length at 6-1. The runner-up paid $7.80 and $6 and finished off the $59.30 exacta ($1). The $1 trifecta returned a healthy $1,531.10 with 65-1 shot Famous Patriot (Repent) earning third, good for $23.40. Anak Nakal (Victory Gallop) was another head back at 13-1 and capped the $1 superfecta (4-13-5-11), which paid $32,918.

Fearless Vision (Vision and Verse) was three-parts behind in fifth and followed by It's a Bird (Birdonthewire), Cuba (Not For Love), Finallymadeit, National Pride (Macho Uno), Bribon (Fr) (Mark of Esteem [Ire]), True Resurgence (Yes It's True), Now a Victor (Yankee Victor), Rexson's Rose (Suave Prospect) and Storm in May (Tiger Ridge).

Delightful Kiss was second most recently in the Clark H. (G2) and improved his lifetime mark to 23-7-4-2, $882,873. The gelded five-year-old, who was a close fourth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Marathon two prior, captured the 2007 Ohio Derby (G2) and Iowa Derby, as well as the 2008 All American S. (G3) and Turfway Park Fall Championship S. (G3).

The Florida-bred is out of the winning Deputy's Delight (French Deputy) and has an unnamed two-year-old half-brother by Honour and Glory and an unnamed yearling half-sister by Limehouse. His second dam, the stakes-winning Bishop's Delight (Sawbones), was third in the 1988 Shuvee H. (G1).
