Mayor Marv heads Turf Paradise Derby
Michael Pegram's MAYOR MARV (Distorted Humor) will make his stakes debut against six rivals in Saturday's $100,000 Turf Paradise Derby. A 1 3/4-length maiden special weight winner at Santa Anita on January 17, Mayor Marv is listed as the 2-1 favorite on the morning line for the 1 1/16-mile event.
Mayor Marv needed six starts to break his maiden, but he kept very good company before breaking through with a wire-to-wire victory. Three starts back, the chestnut colt finished second to The Pamplemousse (Kafwain), who subsequently captured the San Rafael S. (G3). Two starts back, Mayor Marv missed by a only a half-length to Papa Clem (Smart Strike), who followed that effort with a commendable second in the Robert B. Lewis S. (G2).
Local hero HIDDEN BOUNTY (Hidden City), a 6 3/4-length winner of the Rattlesnake S. last out and a seven-length scorer in the Lost in the Fog Juvenile S. two back, is the 3-1 second choice on the morning line. Maiden PAUPER'S PRIZE (Repent), who has finished second in both career starts at Santa Anita, is listed as the 7-2 third choice for Vladimir Cerin.
Two races earlier at Turf Paradise, six fillies will contest the $50,000 Arizona Oaks. CARLSBAD (Rocky Bar), who was last seen recording a smashing 19-length tally in the Arizona Juvenile Fillies S., is the top draw in the one-mile test. Hollywood maiden scorer VIKKILEE (Full Mandate) also merits respect.
