Summerly steals Oaks on the front

Summerly brought sunshine into the lives of her connections when winning the Oaks (Lauren Pomeroy/Horsephotos.com)
All did not go as planned in Friday's $554,400 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs as Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC's SUMMERLY (Summer Squall) got the early lead from heavy post-time favorite Sis City (Slew City Slew) and never relinquished her advantage, leaving enough in the tank to hold off a very tired field at the wire by two lengths. The Steve Asmussen-trained miss set fractions of :23 2/5, :47 2/5 and 1:11 2/5 for three quarters with the favorite just off her flank, and appeared as though she would be run down, especially after the field straightened out for the stretch drive after a mile in 1:36 3/5.

Fortunately for jockey Jerry Bailey, Summerly had enough left to leave the Oaks field reeling in deep stretch and, aside from a belated drive from In the Gold (Golden Missile), the duo was never threatened. Gallant Secret (Menifee) closed late for third, 1 3/4 lengths behind In the Gold. Sis City held fourth, but created some nice prices when missing the board as Summerly stopped the clock in 1:50 1/5 for nine fast furlongs.

"We were on the lead and :47 and change for this kind of filly is pretty comfortable," Bailey said. "She broke so well and it didn't appear that Sis City was too comfortable inside of me. Sis City gave me a test or two around the turn and Edgar (Prado) was all over her trying to make up ground."

Summerly returned $11.20, $5 and $4 at 9-2, keying lucrative exotics of $60.40 for the exacta, $1,301.60 for the trifecta and $2,208.30 for the 5-3-9-4 superfecta ($1). In the Gold gave back $6.20 and $5 at 6-1 while Gallant Secret completed the trifecta as the 43-1 longshot, paying $9.20 for the show. Sis City finished the super and was followed by Memorette (Memo [Chi]), Runway Model (Petionville) and Rugula (Bernstein). Dance Away Capote (Capote) and Aspen Tree (Holy Bull) were withdrawn.

The winner was bred in Kentucky by Tom Van Meter and Michael Lowenbaum and is out of the multiple Grade 3-placed Mr. Prospector mare Here I Go. She counts stakes-placed Let 'Em Go (Red Ransom) as a half-brother as well as an unnamed two-year-old half-sister by Menifee and a yearling half-sister by Touch Gold.

Summerly now shows a mark of 8-5-0-1 and nearly doubles her earnings with this score, showing a tally of $709,763. The sophomore previously scored in the Fair Grounds S. (G2) and Silverbulletday S. (G3) earlier this year and also owns a placing in the Golden Rod S. (G2) last season.
