Mayor Marv faces 11 rivals in lucrative Sunland Derby

Michael Pegram's homebred MAYOR MARV (Distorted Humor), a 4 1/2-length winner of the Turf Paradise Derby in his stakes debut last out, headlines a field of 12 three-year-olds in Sunday's $800,000 Sunland Derby. A wire-to-wire maiden winner at Santa Anita two starts back, the Bob Baffert-trained colt led at every call at Turf Paradise last time. He'll stretch out from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/8 miles on Sunday and pick up the services of Victor Espinoza.

Baffert is also responsible for last-out maiden winner MYTHICAL POWER (Congaree), and jockey Garrett Gomez will travel to New Mexico to retain the mount on the promising colt. Multiple stakes-placed KELLY LEAK (Runaway Groom), who was disqualified from a first-place finish in the Best Pal S. (G2) last summer, will seek his first stakes score for trainer Michael Machowsky. The Florida-bred colt exits a turf allowance win at Santa Anita on February 22.

SCOREWITHCATER (Event the Score), MINE THAT BIRD (Birdstone) and SMOKIN' LEGEND (Smoke Glacken), the top three respective finishers from the February 28 Borderland Derby at Sunland Park, will all return for the Sunland Derby. Mine That Bird captured the Grey S. (Can-G3) at Woodbine last October. The Doug O'Neill-trained MARK S COOLER (Johar) owns plenty of stakes experience and will likely appreciate the class relief after squaring off against The Pamplemousse (Kafwain) and Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker) in his last two outings.
