Augustin Stable's INFORMED DECISION (Monarchos) looked beat in upper stretch of Thursday's $300,000 Madison S. (G1) at Keeneland, with 2-5 favorite Ventura (Chester House) rallying on past under vigorous urging from jockey Garrett Gomez. However, Ventura suddenly powered down once clear, allowing Informed Decision to come back on and get up for the head victory with John Velazquez aboard.

Dubai Majesty (Essence of Dubai) moved up to lead the six-horse field through fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 2/5 on the backstretch, with Bear Now (Tiznow) and Informed Decision chasing in behind. Rounding the turn, Ventura began her rally, digging in to make up ground from the back of the pack. The talented lass hit the front and immediately seemed to idle, giving Informed Decision enough leeway to steal the victory in a final time of 1:21 3/5 for seven Polytrack furlongs.

"I thought we were going to be lucky to get a piece of it, to be honest," said Informed Decision's trainer, Jonathan Sheppard. "I talked to John (Velazquez) a little bit in the paddock and I reminded him that she's coming off a layoff and maybe not to set her down too early. He gave her an absolutely beautiful ride. But I must admit when Ventura rolled on by, I thought, 'Another day.'"

"(Ventura) did run by us," Velazquez admitted. "(Informed Decision) hasn't run this year, so I was trying to ride her very cautiously. I didn't want to move until I saw the other horse. The other horse had the momentum already. When (Ventura) passed me, I though, 'Oh, I guess I waited too long.' Finally, when (Informed Decision) got between horses, she kicked on. She did it for me because I fell asleep a little too long."

Informed Decision rewarded her backers with payouts of $8.20, $3 and $2.40 as the 3-1 second choice. Ventura was worth $2.10 and $2.10 while ending the $14.20 exacta. Bear Now finished another 1 1/4 lengths back in third while holding that spot by the same margin over Dubai Majesty. Show returned $3.40 at 19-1 while the trifecta totaled $71. Dubai Majesty completed the 1-4-6-3 superfecta that paid $248.20, while Bsharpsonata (Pulpit) and Authenicat (D'wildcat) finished the order under the wire. Proud Heiress (Broken Vow) was withdrawn.

"She quits; her head goes flat and she just stops," Gomez said of Ventura. "Once she makes the lead, she'll run about 50 yards and then she loses focus and it's over. I took her around, but she was left out on the lead too long. It's cost her before. She's a super mare, though."

Informed Decision is no stranger to the graded winner's circle, taking the Raven Run S. (G2) in her three-year-old finale while setting a new Keeneland Polytrack record of 1:20.86. Prior to that one, the gray lass was an easy winner of the Missile Belle S. and third in the Victory Ride S. (G3). She also recorded a 6 1/4-length win in a Keeneland allowance/optional claimer last year. Making her four-year-old bow in the Madison, the filly has now accumulated $522,587 in lifetime earnings to go along with an 8-6-0-1 career mark.

Bred in Kentucky by Charles L. Kidder & Nancy M. Cole, Informed Decision has passed through the sales ring twice, bringing $150,000 as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling and $320,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May two-year-old. She is out of the winning Palangana (His Majesty) and has a pair of unnamed half-sisters, a Zavata juvenile and a Champali yearling. Informed Decision's second dam is Grade 3 winner and Grade 2-placed Countess North (Northern Dancer), who produced 1985 New Orleans H. (G2) winner Westheimer (Blushing Groom [Fr]).

This is the same family as three-time Grade 1 heroine Banker's Lady (Nijinsky II), Grade 1 scorer Ecton Park (Forty Nner), Grade 2 winners Banker's Gold (Forty Niner), Impetuous Gal (Briartic), Relaxing Rhythm (Easy Goer) and Spring Waltz (Silver Charm) as well as Grade 3 victress Meribel (Peaks and Valleys).
