Preakness field taking shape

High Limit, last in the Derby, will try again in the Preakness (Joseph Tyrrell/Horsephotos.com) The field for the 130th running of the Preakness S. (G1) continues to take shape, with 11 starters confirmed, and a full field of 14 possible for the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, which will be decided at Pimlico on May 21. Edgar Prado, who dominated the Maryland riding circuit in the 1990s, has been named to ride Louisiana Derby (G2) winner HIGH LIMIT (Maria's Mon), according to the Pimlico press office. The Bobby Frankel-trained colt finished last in the Kentucky Derby (G1). Trainer Warren Stute said David Flores will have his first Preakness mount aboard GREELEY'S GALAXY (Mr. Greeley), who finished 11th in the "Run for the Roses." The colt's regular rider, Kent Desormeaux, is scheduled to be in Japan. "He'll have his final workout tomorrow at Churchill Downs," Stute said. "We're sending him five furlongs -- just a maintenance move to keep him fit." Other probables for the 1 3/16-mile classic include the first three finishers of the Kentucky Derby -- GIACOMO (Holy Bull), CLOSING ARGUMENT (Successful Appeal) and AFLEET ALEX (Northern Afleet) -- as well as WILKO (Awesome Again), who finished sixth in Derby 131. Five horses who did not run in the Kentucky Derby -- GALLOPING GROCER (A. P Jet), GOLDEN MAN (Suave Prospect), HAL'S IMAGE (Halo's Image), MALIBU MOONSHINE (Malibu Moon) and SCRAPPY T (Fit to Fight) -- are expected to be entered in the Preakness.

Trainer Nick Zito lists HIGH FLY (Atticus), NOBLE CAUSEWAY (Giant's Causeway) and SUN KING (Charismatic) as possible Preakness starters. The trio finished 10th, 14th and 15th, respectively, in the Derby. A decision is expected Monday.

GOING WILD (Golden Missile), who finished 18th in the Derby, could also run in the Preakness, according to trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

In other Preakness news:

Sleepy Hollow S. winner Galloping Grocer worked five furlongs in :59 2/5 over a fast track at Belmont Park on Friday. The move, under jockey Joe Bravo, was the third fastest of 24 works at the distance. The Dominick Schettino trainee is winless in four starts this season and most recently finished a close third in the New York Stallion S. (Times Square Division) at Aqueduct on April 24.

Withers S. (G3) winner Scrappy T breezed four furlongs in :48 2/5 over a fast track at Delaware Park on Wednesday. Trainer Robert Bailes plans to ship the colt to Old Hilltop on Monday.

"He came out of his work super," Bailes said. "He'll probably stretch his legs at Pimlico Wednesday morning."

Ramon Dominguez, who rode High Limit in the Derby, has the call.

Legendary Maryland conditioner King Leatherbury said Federico Tesio S. winner Malibu Moonshine will breeze three furlongs on Saturday under Preakness rider Steve Hamilton.

"He went very nicely this morning," Leatherbury said. "He doesn't need much (work). It may end up being a half-mile work by the time he pulls up."

Trainer Tim Ritchey said Afleet Alex, who is stabled at Pimlico, will be sent out to train twice on Saturday.
