Clan is Pure class in Modesty

Lewis Lakin's homebred PURE CLAN (Pure Prize) proved to be much the best in the $200,000 Modesty H. (G3) over the Arlington Park turf course on Saturday, taking over in the lane and drawing clear by a convincing 2 1/2 lengths at the wire. Kept wide throughout by Julien Leparoux, the Bob Holthus trainee got her cue at the top of the stretch and she responded immediately, pulling clear with each stride. She completed the 1 3/16-mile firm turf event in 1:55 1/5 and returned $3.60, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 4-5 choice.

Tizaqueena (Tiznow) led through moderate splits of :25 1/5, :49 4/5 and 1:13 3/5 for the opening six furlongs, prior to battling on gamely to muster place honors by a neck as the 7-2 third choice. The runner-up was worth $3.40 and $2.20 and finished the $11.40 exacta. Dynaforce (Dynaformer) tracked the early leader but couldn't quicken late while checking in third as the 2-1 second choice. She was worth $2.20 while completing the $15.40 trifecta. Lemonette (Lemon Drop Kid) sat on the bottom of the $40.20 superfecta (1-2-6-4) and was trailed by Ciao (Lear Fan). Colina Verde (Brz) (Know Heights [Ire]) was withdrawn in favor of Saturday's Dance Smartly S. (Can-G2) at Woodbine.

Pure Clan earned her biggest win to date when bagging the 2008 American Oaks Invitational S. (G1) at Hollywood Park. She also owns wins in the Golden Rod S. (G2), Pocahontas S. (G3) and Regret S. (G3) to go along with a handful of graded stakes placings, including the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Garden City S. (G1). Pure Clan was coming off a rattling second in the Mint Julep H. (G3) in her 2009 debut. The classy four-year-old sports $1,193,998 in earnings from a 13-7-3-2 lifetime line.

Bred in Kentucky by A. Lakin & Sons Inc., Pure Clan is out of Grade 3 heroine Gather the Clan (Ire) (General Assembly), who is also responsible for Grade 2 winner Greater Good (Intidab) and an unnamed yearling colt by Gone West. Gather the Clan's daughters have produced the likes of Frizette S. (G1) heroine Sky Diva (Sky Mesa) and recent Deceit S. romper Yes She's a Lady (Yes It's True). Pure Clan's second dam is What a Summer (What Luck), champion sprinter of 1977.

Pure Clan is expected to return to this course and distance for the August 8 Beverly D. S. (G1).
